Experts' Global Official Explanation

Parallelism + Grammatical Construction + Meaning + Redundancy/Awkwardness

Understanding the intended meaning is key to solving this question; the intended meaning of the crucial part of this sentence is that prominent consumer goods retailers have increasingly invested in Mandarin-language marketing, partly for the purpose of acquiring new customers for their Chinese branches.

    • Any elements linked by a conjunction (“and” in this sentence) must be parallel.
    • “should” is used to convey a sense of obligation/desirability.

A. This answer choice alters the meaning of the sentence through the phrase “should acquire new customers”; the use of the word “should” incorrectly implies that prominent consumer goods retailers have increasingly invested in Mandarin-language marketing partly because it is necessary/desirable that their Chinese branches acquire new customers; the intended meaning is that prominent consumer goods retailers have increasingly invested in Mandarin-language marketing partly for the purpose of acquiring new customers for their Chinese branches. Further, Option A fails to maintain parallelism between “in part their…” and “partly because…”; please remember, any elements linked by a conjunction (“and” in this sentence) must be parallel. Additionally, Option A uses the needlessly wordy phrase “in part that”, leading to awkwardness.

B. This answer choice fails to maintain parallelism between “in part for the…” and “partly because…”; please remember, any elements linked by a conjunction (“and” in this sentence) must be parallel. Further, Option B uses the needlessly wordy phrase “in part for the acquisition of”, leading to awkwardness.

C. This answer choice alters the meaning of the sentence through the phrase “partly because of their Chinese branches acquiring new customers”; the construction of this phrase incorrectly implies that consumer goods retailers have increasingly invested in Mandarin-language marketing partly because their Chinese branches have already acquired new customers; the intended meaning is that prominent consumer goods retailers have increasingly invested in Mandarin-language marketing partly for the purpose of acquiring new customers for their Chinese branches.

D. Correct. This answer choice uses the phrase “partly to acquire new customers…”, conveying the intended meaning- that prominent consumer goods retailers have increasingly invested in Mandarin-language marketing partly for the purpose of acquiring new customers for their Chinese branches. Further, Option D maintains parallelism between “partly to acquire…” and “partly because…”. Additionally, Option D is free of awkwardness and redundancy.

E. Trap. This answer choice alters the meaning of the sentence through the phrase “new customers should be acquired”; the use of the word “should” incorrectly implies that prominent consumer goods retailers have increasingly invested in Mandarin-language marketing partly because it is necessary/desirable that their Chinese branches acquire new customers; the intended meaning is that prominent consumer goods retailers have increasingly invested in Mandarin-language marketing partly for the purpose of acquiring new customers for their Chinese branches. Further, Option E uses the passive voice construction “new customers should be acquired”, rendering it needlessly indirect and wordy.

D is the best answer choice.
General Discussion

Dec 24, 2022

In recent years, many prominent consumer goods retailers have increasingly invested in Mandarin-language marketing, <<<in part that their Chinese branches should acquire new customers>>> and partly because the Chinese Diaspora is projected to increase substantially over the next decade.

(A) in part that their Chinese branches should acquire new customers
- in part THAT? this is stating a reason for investing in Mandarin... not something that is happening on its own

(B) in part for the acquisition of new customers by their Chinese branches
- "retailers have increasingly invested in Mandarin-language marketing... for the acquisition of new customers" --

(C) partly because of their Chinese branches acquiring new customers
- makes it sound as if the branches have started acquiring new customers already and that is why they need mandarin language marketing, while he actual meaning is the other way around

(D) partly to acquire new customers for their Chinese branches
- sounds fine

(E) partly because new customers should be acquired by their Chinese branches
- they "should" be acquired, yes... but it makes me think that marketing may or may not result in acquisition... D is better.. states the exact goal of the plan

"and partly" shows that ||ism is tested here

(A) in part that their Chinese branches should acquire new customers - Failed ||ism. Out.
(B) in part for the acquisition of new customers by their Chinese branches - Failed ||ism. Out.
(C) partly because of their Chinese branches acquiring new customers - Failed ||ism. Also wrong meaning. Out.
(D) partly to acquire new customers for their Chinese branches - This correct the ||ism and is direct.

A) Usage of should is incorrect here. We want to say that they did it to acquire new customers for the Chinese branches, not that they should acquire them. Out.

B) Keep.

C) This changes the meaning of the sentence. If acquiring is a modifier here, it becomes "partly because of Chinese Branches"... not really logical. Moreover, I believe the meaning is that they firms are investing to acquire more Chinese customers, not that they are investing because they acquired Chinese customers as C implies. Therefore, out.

D) Keep.

E) Much like A, E uses should which is incorrect in this context.

B vs D. I believe D has the better meaning - B has the usage of "for". This is worse than the usage of to, IMO.

D final answer.

In recent years, many prominent consumer goods retailers have increasingly invested in Mandarin-language marketing, in part that their Chinese branches should acquire new customers and partly because the Chinese Diaspora is projected to increase substantially over the next decade.

(A) in part that their Chinese branches should acquire new customers
-not parallel
(B) in part for the acquisition of new customers by their Chinese branches
-not parallel
(C) partly because of their Chinese branches acquiring new customers
-parallel but acquiring new customers is non-idiomatic
(D) partly to acquire new customers for their Chinese branches
-parallel , to acquire is correct

(E) partly because new customers should be acquired by their Chinese branches
- parallel but "should be acquired" is twisting the meaning

Dec 24, 2022

In recent years, many prominent consumer goods retailers have increasingly invested in Mandarin-language marketing, in part that their Chinese branches should acquire new customers and partly because the Chinese Diaspora is projected to increase substantially over the next decade.

From the original sentence we get two components for parallelism: partly and the structure of the following piece, which is a full clause with a subject [the Chinese Diaspora] and a predicate [is projected].

Therefore, we need to have the conjunction 'PARTLY', so we eliminate A and B.

Also, after 'PARTLY', we need a full clause - so we eliminate C and D.

Therefore, the right answer is E.

Dec 24, 2022

(A) in part that their Chinese branches should acquire new customers
Lacks Parallalism

(B) in part for the acquisition of new customers by their Chinese branches
Lacks Parallalism

(C) partly because of their Chinese branches acquiring new customers
Lacks Parallalism

(D) partly to acquire new customers for their Chinese branches
Changes the intended meaning. They are not investing to acquire, but they are investing because chinese branches will acquire customers

(E) partly because new customers should be acquired by their Chinese branches
Correct

Dec 24, 2022

A- in part is not parallel to partly- hence, incorrect.

B- Same as A.

C- This leads to the meaning the retailers have invested in mandarin-language marketing because of their Chinese branches already acquiring customers. This is different from the intended meaning which is that they are investing in mandarin-language marketing to acquire customers.

D- Seems right. Parallelism is good and meaning is correct.

E- new customers should be acquired is not the reason the retailers are investing. The retailers are investing to acquire customers.

Hence, IMO D.

Explanation:
(A) Two elements separated by and should be parallel. Here, "in part" is not parallel to "partly because". OUT.
(B) Incorrect for the same reason as (A). OUT.
(C) Alters the meaning of the sentence. The intended meaning says retailers have increasingly invested in Mandarin-language marketing so that their Chinese branches should acquire new customers whereas as per the given option the meaning conveyed is that new customers have already been acquired because of which retailers have increasingly invested in Mandarin-language marketing. OUT.
(D) Two elements separated by and should be parallel. Here, "partly to" is not parallel to "partly because". OUT.
(E) Two elements separated by and should be parallel. Here, "partly because" is parallel to "partly because". Also, the sentence conveys the intended meaning that retailers' Chinese branches should acquire new customers. KEEP IT.

ANSWER E.

Dec 24, 2022

In recent years, many prominent consumer goods retailers have increasingly invested in Mandarin-language marketing, in part that their Chinese branches should acquire new customers and partly because the Chinese Diaspora is projected to increase substantially over the next decade.

(A) in part that their Chinese branches should acquire new customers-----in part that does not convey reasoning
(B) in part for the acquisition of new customers by their Chinese branches-- in part for is incorrect idiom
(C) partly because of their Chinese branches acquiring new customers--- They have aquired branches for an action to take place in the future. This chocie implies they are acquiring customers now
(D) partly to acquire new customers for their Chinese branches-- not parallel to the following element which is a clause
(E) partly because new customers should be acquired by their Chinese branches--- parallel as well as tense is being maintained

Ans E

Sentence structure -
In recent years, many prominent consumer goods retailers have increasingly invested in Mandarin-language marketing,
in part that their Chinese branches should acquire new customers and
partly because the Chinese Diaspora is projected to increase substantially over the next decade.

Parallelism is being tested. In the second part after and we have "partly" so in the first part also we need "partly"

Meaning -
Many prominent consumer good retailers have increasingly invested in Mandarin-language marketing for the following reasons-
1. Chinese branches to acquire new customers
2. the Chinese Diaspora is projected to increase substantially over the next decade

(A) in part that their Chinese branches should acquire new customers
Incorrect. Not parallel. Meaning changed due to "should". Increase in marketing is done to acquire new customers for Chinese branches

(B) in part for the acquisition of new customers by their Chinese branches
Incorrect. Not parallel

(C) partly because of their Chinese branches acquiring new customers
Incorrect. Meaning changed - Increase in marketing is done to acquire new customers for Chinese branches

(D) partly to acquire new customers for their Chinese branches
Correct.

(E) partly because new customers should be acquired by their Chinese branches
Incorrect. Meaning changed due to "should". Increase in marketing is done to acquire new customers for Chinese branches

D is the correct answer

Dec 24, 2022

In statement A,B we can see the parallelism error. So we should eliminate that options.

(C) partly because of their Chinese branches acquiring new customers - Seems correct, but we can see the parallelism error here too
(D) partly to acquire new customers for their Chinese branches - by using "to" meaning of the sentence changed
(E) partly because new customers should be acquired by their Chinese branches - Correct

IMO E

Dec 24, 2022

In recent years, many prominent consumer goods retailers have increasingly invested in Mandarin-language marketing, in part that their Chinese branches should acquire new customers and partly because the Chinese Diaspora is projected to increase substantially over the next decade.

(A) in part that their Chinese branches should acquire new customers

'in part' is not correct since it is too formal for its use in this context

(B) in part for the acquisition of new customers by their Chinese branches

similarly here, 'in part' is not correct since it is too formal for its use in this context

(C) partly because of their Chinese branches acquiring new customers
usage of 'partly' is correct..because should be followed by a DC

(D) partly to acquire new customers for their Chinese branches

usage of 'partly' is correct..concise and brings out the meaning correctly

(E) partly because new customers should be acquired by their Chinese branches

changes the meaning..'purpose' to 'suggestion'

IMO, (D) will be the answer

Dec 24, 2022

In recent years, many prominent consumer goods retailers have increasingly invested in Mandarin-language marketing, in part that their Chinese branches should acquire new customers and partly because the Chinese Diaspora is projected to increase substantially over the next decade.

(A) in part that their Chinese branches should acquire new customers
to identfy the purpose of investment....'partly to' will be more appropriate

(B) in part for the acquisition of new customers by their Chinese branches

to identfy the purpose of investment....'partly to' will be more appropriate

Now checking for 'partly' as the beginning of the underlined portion

(C) partly because of their Chinese branches acquiring new customers

doesn't indicate the purpose as an act

(D) partly to acquire new customers for their Chinese branches

correctly depicts the purpose as an act

(E) partly because new customers should be acquired by their Chinese branches

should be acquired alters the meaning vis-a-vis the original

Hence, (D) is the answer

Dec 24, 2022

In recent years, many prominent consumer goods retailers have increasingly invested in Mandarin-language marketing, in part that their Chinese branches should acquire new customers and partly because the Chinese Diaspora is projected to increase substantially over the next decade.

(A) in part that their Chinese branches should acquire new customers
The construction “in part that their Chinese branches………” is not parallel with the rest of the sentence that starts with the adverb “partly.”

(B) in part for the acquisition of new customers by their Chinese branches
The construction “in part for the acquisition of………” is not parallel with the rest of the sentence that starts with the adverb “partly.” Also, the passive construction makes this choice wordy and awkward. Such a choice is likely a correct answer on the GMAT.

(C) partly because of their Chinese branches acquiring new customers
The use of present continuous in “Chinese branches acquiring new customers” distorts the meaning. It suggests that the action of Chinese branches acquiring new customers is ongoing, which is not the intent of the original sentence.

(D) partly to acquire new customers for their Chinese branches
This choice correctly uses the infinitive “to acquire” to show the intent of prominent consumer goods retailers to increasingly invest in Mandarin-language marketing.
This choice maintains the parallelism with both the underlined part and the rest of the sentence starting with the adverb “partly” and separated by the conjunction “and”. This choice is likely the correct answer.

(E) partly because new customers should be acquired by their Chinese branches
The use of “should” is generally used to show obligation. In the context of the original sentence this word is incorrectly used. This choice is INCORRECT.

Answer : OPTION D

Dec 24, 2022

Answer is D
In recent years, many prominent consumer goods retailers have increasingly invested in Mandarin-language marketing, in part that their Chinese branches should acquire new customers and partly because the Chinese Diaspora is projected to increase substantially over the next decade.
