Q) what do i want from my MBA? - I want my MBA to provide the knowledge n specific skills to run a business. Electrical engineer incharge in offshore industry with experience on vessels and in shipyard. During my training period, I was recommended to be promoted to an independent role before the actual time period. Was first one in my company to get promoted that soon. As an electrical engineer I was incharge of everything electrical and electronic with a small assisting team. Job included operational management, maintenance, installation and repair of electrical systems. Was a part of major offshore operations such as rig towing, platform service/support, underwater oil pipeline inspections with help of underwater robotic vehicles for different clients such as Exxon-mobil, GSPC, Reliance, ONGC etc. Was electrical supervisor/inspector for construction and commissioning of multimillion dollar platform support vessel from a Chinese shipyard to Nigeria. Passed numerous classification surveys by independent bodies such as DNV, ABS etc. Never had a single electrical downtime in my career. Have taught and supervised interns, and reported their performance.

I relate everything thing to creativity. I am an art buff since childhood and have participated, won several art competitions during college and school days. Be it my learning process or troubleshooting methods I try to find different ways to do so. However, lack of time has slowed me down. I don't devote much time to art now. Still, last October I organised an art exhibition with a theme of Human emotions. It was covered by local media. I am not sure how relevant this hobby, still i will write it here to get some feedback.

My concern- I am not able to relate my past with present and present to future. My experience and qualification in electrical sets me up to understand major sustainable technologies, but I can't vividly think of how to lay that out on paper. energy/power--IT business role--sustainability. I don't want to risk my admission because of lack of clarity in goals, so even if you suggest me something about altering my goals a bit I'm all ears.

-I had family health issues that I will not disclose here, but I did not know how to deal with the demanding military and academic curriculum and family issues at home.
-I have always wanted to attend a top MBA program, but I knew my UG gpa is a scarlet letter. I took finance and accounting in Graduate school where I got A's in, out performed peers during my careers and scored a fair GMAT 710 to compensate.

Target Schools in no particular order: CBS, NYU, Tepper, Darden, Cornell

So my question is, have I done enough to offset my poor UG GPA?
And are my target schools reasonable?

I have been in search of a community or a forum, to find out the best-suited courses in MBA or MSc aligned with Corporate Social Responsibility and green/sustainable management. So far it's been a struggle to find a similar pool of applicants or threads for such courses and I'm really not able to find some good measure of rankings.

29 year old female from India, with GMAT score of 700 (Q-43 V-42 AWA-6.0 IR-7). So, I did my MBA in HR from one of the borderline premier institutes in India.
Currently am a HR Manager working with a major sales and distribution firm in India. My role is of HR Business partnering for sales division of an entire state.
Prior to this, post my engineering I had 2 years of solid work ex with a major battery manufacturing firm in the role of product development.
I plan to take the GMAT and go for a second MBA with the sole purpose of transitioning my career out of HR, preferably into general management or strategy.
My query is, would my workex in HR be a major hurdle in getting admitted in the top B schools? Are professionals with work ex in HR given a differential treatment?
Also, will my workex in HR be detrimental to the career transition that I am planning to make while getting a job post the MBA?
Please help!

I havent found any examples of people with HR workex getting into the top B schools. would be great if someone shares such profiles.
Also can anyone guide me regarding whom or where should I talk with regarding my queries?

Founded a manufacturing start-up where I worked for 5 years. Grew the company revenue by more than 600% in five years before I decided to sell it. Reason being wanted to switch in a Operations role in Hi-Tech

Working in Amazon as Operations Manager for the past 2 years. Leading a team of 200 people

Co-curricular- Was the Vice President of a non-profit for 3.5 years, raised more than $60K for the same. Peer Coach at Ross, leadership positions in some clubs but nothing major.

I applied in B-Schools before my masters but got dinged by most. I’m only targeting the following schools-

I recently gave the GMAT and scored about 710 (Q47 V40). I'm 25 years old with 1.5 years of work experience, and have no engineering/commerce/business background. I am an English major who did a masters in public relations (which was the field I worked in for said 1.5 years), and am looking to get an MBA to pursue marketing. I am currently trying to make the switch to marketing by looking for a job that will offer me such a role to get hands on experience of the kind of work it entails.

More about my education, I scored 95% in class 10, 91% in class 12, after which I pursued one year of engineering which I later quit to study literature. In terms of extra curricular activities, I was an active parliamentary debater in college and held leadership positions. I also topped my college during my post grad in public relations.

My initial plan was to apply for ISB (batch to 2020), but I have been told that the average work ex is 4 years, and they might not look favourably at my low quant score (63 percentile) despite getting an overall 91 percentile. I am also uncertain about studying abroad since it is quite difficult for students who choose marketing to get work visas in the country of study, and recovering the cost of the MBA in India might not be a good idea.

I will be looking to retake the GMAT in the next couple of months to improve my quant score, only if ISB is a viable choice for someone with my profile. I am not sure what the preference (or lack of) is like for media/advertising students applying to ISB.

Could someone advise how I should go ahead with this? Do I need to retake the GMAT and what score would help me present myself favourably to admission committees, given that I have a very unconventional profile. Do I also look at schools abroad, and which would be good schools to target? Would it be wise to apply with my current score?

-Go to the one year MBA at my local university (Emory, where I think I can get close to a full scholarship), continue working part-time or take 1 year off and come back to my current role.

My query:- I always wanted to do an MBA as it was my dream to work for a private company. Due to financial constraints, I was not able to apply for MBA in foreign universities. I had no interest in Indian MBA as I always wanted to work in a foreign country. Also Indian MBA had very low chances to get me placed in a foreign firm. Private firms in India without an MBA gives very less salary and high load which would not have given me time to make my profile for foreign MBA.
Therefore, I decided to pursue a government job and finance my future MBA from that money.
I intend to do an MBA after 5 years. I can score score very well in GMAT and TOEFL from official mocks that I have given. I am interested in doing MBA from Canada so that I can get permanent residency. I am aiming for "average" b schools in Canada only.
Please I am in dire need of help. I have 5 years at my disposal. Please guide me on how can I make my profile in these 5 years so that the adcoms don't reject me. Also honestly tell me whether I am eligible of doing MBA from an average Business School in Canada only.

UG: B.Sc (Nautical Sciences) 71%(first div) Mumbai University- TS CHANAKYA(2008-2011) (there is no grading system)
GMAT 1: 660-(77%) (Q43-47%/V38-85%/IR5-54%/AWA4-17%) (wil be appearing again next year before application)

Professional background:

Total WE: 6+(applying in 2019) in Merchant Navy on cargo ships (foreign going)
Current rank : Second navigating Officer (current sailing exp: 10 months)(2016-2018)
Previous Ranks: Third navigating Officer (16 months sailing exp)(2014-2016)
Training navigating officer (12 months sailing exp)(2012-2014)

Extra- Curriculars:

- Head of Literary Committee in college (Third year)(2010-2011)
- member of Literary Committee in college(First & Second Year- 2008-2010)
- Editor of college magazine & Wall magazine
- Head of college fest organizers in third year
- Member of college fest committee in first & Second year
- Organised various cultural events throughout the college tenure
- Various achievements at school level in olympiads and competitions

Target colleges:

- ISB Hyderabad
- IIMs Ahmedabad / Bangalore
- Any US and European college that might be in reach (i honestly have no idea about schools outside India but their names such as duke)

Future Goal:

To work as operations manager with Amazon/Flipkart/OYO/RIVIGO/Paytm and others.

I am well aware that i would need 700+ for a call from indian colleges and more than 750 for a call from some good foreign colleges but would like to know how much is really needed and what else can i do for an admit?

Indian, Male, Electrical Engineer, working in Operations in a Power plant. Working in the operations department involves problem-solving, making strategies, and people management.

 Academics:
1. Bachelor in Engineering (Electrical and electronics), 2012, 70.86%. (10th standard: 72.6%). (12th standard: 79.8%)
2. Post Graduate Programme In Thermal Power plant technology from Jindal Institute of Power Technology. 2013.

 Work experience: 6 years, India

 Cross-functional Experience:
1) As a procurement executive in the Commercial department for various service contract execution.
2) As a sales manager in the Marketing department for the execution of aluminum sales to customers.

 Extra-curriculars:
1) Photography Club member in my company. Involved in CSR events organized by the company to take pictures.
2) Hostel food committee Head: During my B.E, I was the in-charge of the food committee.
3) 2nd position holder in Loser's win weight-loss competition among 150+ people.

 Test Scores: GMAT: 640 (Q44, V34) IR4, AWA 5. (Planning to make another attempt soon.)
( PS: It's a pretty low score, but as the deadlines are nearby I am thinking to apply and save one year. Probability is Zero if I do not apply.)

 Post-MBA Goal: I want to change my career path towards consulting/strategy after my MBA.

 My Questions for the Experts: What are my odds considering my profile and the test scores described in the previous sentences?
