Could you please provide any insights on what one should write/approach why one should get the scholarships in 2 year MBA program especially for US schools(top 15/20 )...?

Much appreciate your feedback on this.

Hello bagdbmba,

MBA scholarships are typically awarded on a merit basis and business schools utilize scholarship money and fellowships to persuade exceptional candidates to accept the school's offer of admission. For many schools, there might not be a formal process to apply for MBA scholarship money. Instead, admissions boards make scholarship offers based on the quality of the applicant and his or her application. Therefore, my first tip is to ensure that your application is exceptional and that you have sent strong signals to the school that you are extremely motivated to attend their program. Scholarship money is scarce and admissions committees are more likely to offer scholarship money to students who have communicated that they are serious about attending their program. In certain cases, scholarship money is supplied by donors who want to support a particular kind of MBA candidate. For example, a donor may designate that his or her scholarship be granted to an MBA student with an engineering undergraduate degree. If so, admissions boards will review their list of accepted students and offer the scholarship to applicants who match those qualifying criteria.

A few business schools do have specific scholarship (or fellowship) essay questions. What one should write on these essays would depend on what question has been asked. Our admissions consultants provide editorial guidance on MBA scholarship essays to clients who have engaged our help on a comprehensive/school package basis. Last year, many of our clients had the good fortune of earning scholarship money.

Finally, I encourage you to reach out to each business school you are applying to by email or by phone to find out if they offer any additional avenues for seeking scholarship money. It is often the case that MBA schools expect applicants to pursue scholarship money proactively; so It never hurts to ask. I wish you the best of luck in earning some scholarship money to pay for your MBA.

I am sorry but I don't have access to the data you are asking about. What I can tell you is that our MBA admissions clients who are in the real estate industry rank Wharton very high on their list. I believe Columbia and Stern also have solid recruiting relationships with the real estate (esp. real estate finance) industry. Cornell has the Baker Program, a master's program in real estate. The career placement offices at these schools might have the kind of information you are seeking. Good luck!

Hi Tyler,
Thank you for your reply...

It would have been really great if you could shed some deep insights on the Wharton/Cornell (I think they have also MBA program with RE focus) MBA with RE focus...

Much appreciate your feedback.

Hey Tyler ,
Thanks a lot for your detail reply.Really appreciate it Sir... :) Kudos!

Yup! you're right ...not many schools offer need-based scholarships,it's mostly merit-based scholarships and for the latter it's really a strategic decision and as you've said- heavily depends on one's candidacy overall. So for this merit-based scholarships, most of the schools as you've mentioned, don't have any separate applications. In that case, applicants need to show their best strength through their essays only I guess. Is there any other way to showcase this...? Your thoughts on this please...!

My second question is-In general how the need based offers are determined..? Is it based on the personal assets of the candidate solely or that of his/her family or else?

Look forward to your reply Sir..!

P.S: It would be really helpful if you can let me know what are the schools specifically among top 20 that encourage this pro-activeness...? Or is it a general thing for any b-school?

Hi bagdbmba,

First of all, thanks for the Kudos!

I could write a book on how to showcase your top strengths in the written MBA application and admissions interviews. In fact, I have. https://mbaprepschool.com/ebook/ 8-)

Regarding needs based offers, schools employ a financial aid application that asks several questions aimed at determining your need. There is a standard form used across schools but schools sometimes have additional forms and formulas that are specific to that school. Just about every school's web site will have a page or area devoted to their financial aid practices. For example: https://www.hbs.edu/mba/financial-aid/Pages/default.aspx

As for being proactive, that's really a general tip. Typically, after you've been accepted by a school you can write or call the admissions office to ask about scholarship opportunities. There are also websites that compile MBA scholarship information (though I can't say I have heard any rave reviews from my clients about these websites). Here is an example: https://www.mbascholarships101.com/

Cheers,
Tyler

Hi everybody!

I do really need a feedback on my profile. I want to go for mba and want to understand what level of b-school I can count on.
Im 27 and holding a Russian passport, have 4,5 years of working experience, but1,5 years I had been working before graduating from uni despite working full-time.
Got my bachelor degree in management from economic faculty of Lomonosov Moscow State University and MSc in Energy,Trade and Finance from Cass Business School London both with merit.

All of my jobs were linked to Oil and Gas, firstly I worked 1,5 years for Gazprom subsidiary in Moscow where I was in Commercial and Project Management Departments and later after my masters I moved to oil trading where I worked as Analyst in Moscow rep office for Swiss based commodity trader for 1,5 years and afterwards went to Dubai to small bunker trading house with only 4 people in the office for also 1,5 years. I stuck in the position of Financial Supervisor and want to do MBA for career progression.

my goal is to switch to finance/consulting, would be ideal to get to the mentioned fields but still be linked to Oil&Gas or commodities (like trade finance or Oil&Gas consulting) or to go to one of the Oil&Gas Majors.

I haven't taken GMAT yet but hope to get 670-710 range, that means that I am planning take test until getting the mentioned score.

Looking mostly for European school, LBS MBA is a first choice but also considering for LBS MIF as an alternative because it seems reasonable for me to get derivatives and risk management specialization to pursue my goal (and it is one year program being an advantage from my point of view). But still have doubts may be to go for one-year MBA rather than MIF (like Oxbridge or HEC Paris).

Another consideration is about whether it is worth it to go back studying again as it is not very common to have MBA in commodities sector and just to keep on working.

I would really appreciate your feedback/comments/suggestions

Many thanks

Hi,

I request you to evaluate my profile. I am really confused. I scored 710 (q-49,v-39, ir-4) in GMAT. I have experience of 27 months . My condition after mba is to come back to india and work in india, prefebally in product management and long term goal after 5 years to start my own venture. I am aiming at ISB india, Nanyang, singapore, NUS singapore, please also suggest colleges which would be feasible (cost basis) , so that i can work in india

2010-2013 - Bachelors of Business economics from delhi university

Highlights- started up a venture in 2011-2012 with classmates. I was the main founder. Developed the whole idea and the Website . we were able to have positive revenue from day1. Stopped because of issues between co-founders.

Developed online registration websites for multiple college fests
Member of Aiesec. Hosted Foreign students who were interning in my city
Participated in college level Mun's, business competitions and debates.

2013- 2014 (9 months)- Worked as Analyst(online sales) with an e-commerce arm of a company selling refurbished electronics. Area of responsibilities was equivalent to that of an assistant product manager.
Highlights- worked on revamping the website's design and supervised development of new features including making the site mobile friendly. Interviewed candidates for 'UI designer' profile. Created macro based excel sheet for content team which decreased data entry time to 50% and increased accuracy by the same percentage. Implemented task management software instead of email for content team for better tracking and communication. Proposed and lead a project for creating a dynamic system where sales manager can use different design elements to highlight different product catalog on different days without asking tech team to do anything. Proposed and helped revamp the order tracking system for customers.

2014-2014 (one month)- Worked as a product manager with zomato, a leading food related startup in india.
Highlights -
I was called for an interview after the company's ceo read my post about the company on a social media platform. I was interviewed and hired directly by the ceo. Worked speficially on their newly launched social newsfeed. I proposed some drastic changes in the approach like showing stories based on user's favourite cuisines and locality based on user's history. I had to leave the company so early as my parents needed my urgent help in their construction project in my hometown.

2014 august- November 2015 (15 months) - Worked as Co-owner of a hotel construction project with my parents
Highlights-

My parents were planning a student's hostel but seeing the trend in the city, i asked them to convert the project in to a mid-budget Hotel. I was responsible for major design-related decisions and procurement of materials needed. I took all the major design decisions related to furniture, lighting, beds, floor, paint colors etc. During this time i contacted a manager of a major hotel brand for a possible partnership but it couldn't happen because of lack of funds required to furnish the brand's compliances. But nevertheless, I build good relationship with the manager and he connected me with several companies and contractors to procure materials and hire them . Because of this, i was able to get superior quality and low prices which was not possible to do on my own. During this time, I learned a lot from my parents who have been doing business for last 25 years. I also experienced the Ground realities in India like challenges faced by small businessmen, hardships of the laborers and low waged employees.

July 2015- December 2015(5 months) - while working on the hotel project, I didn't want to leave my interest in online consumer internet sector, so with a friend, I started an online event discovery website based in Delhi. I hired a programmer based in another city, worked on the user interface and design myself and skyped till late in night with him to coordinate the project, my friends was talking to event organizers in Delhi as I couldn't go there because of hotel project but I used to go on weekends. I had to stop it unfortunately as it was getting very difficult to manage two projects and ultimately I chose hotel project as more funds were invested in that and a huge risk involved

December 2015- current(1 year) - Starting and running the hotel

Started the operations of the hotel. Hired the staff. my parents helped a lot in making key hire decisions. My father taught me to keep an eye on Finances. Developed key relationships with executives of different online hotel selling companies and listed the hotel on several websites. created website for hotel. I give incentive to staff based on customer reviews. In one year, we have averaged occupancy above 70%, build tieups with corporate companies and we get positive customer reviews. But the main important thing i learned is there are huge problems to solve and oppurtunities in india and i need a better platform, oppurtunity to connect with great people and enhance my skill set to fulfill my long term goal of creating a postive impact on the society.

Q) Do you have a specific Company to work for? - I do not have a specific company to work for. My areas of interest are marketing and consulting . Of course every aspirant desires to be in the best of the best companies. Rather than working for a company would love to have company of my own down the line

Q) what do i want from my MBA? - I want my MBA to provide the knowledge n specific skills to run a business. It comes with experience i am sure but an MBA adds value and can make one think better in terms of the business. I would like to start a company of my own. My father has his own business and i want to diversify its services . A marketing related MBA would help me to make my company more reachable to cater to the needs of clients. At this stage my answer isn't clear and might be vague but i still haven't put a thought to it . Mostly like i wish MBA helps me better to run a business

Q) Mba full time/part time - I would want to do an MBA full time (2/1 year is fine) . I turned 25 last week so at the moment thinking i could use 2 years for an MBA unless a one year MBA suits me more. I am willing to relocate and looking for schools in India , US , UK , Singapore

Areas of Interest - Marketing / Consulting
Dream School – Kellog (Marketing)

What schools would you suggest to apply to based on this Profile assuming i still score a 710 in my retake . Targeting R1 this year , want to join a school in 2018

Other schools on my mind - Yale , Oxford , NUS , NTU , ISB . Also do i stand a chance at Harvard/ Stanford / Haas ( the elite ) if not what can i do to solidify my application for applying to these schools. I would like to apply to 6 schools One in India (ISB) , 3 In the United States , 1 in UK , 1 in Singapore , i haven't given much of a thought but any advice here would help

Target Score for Retake - 740 (QA 50 VA 40) , owing to my poor academics , i thought of giving the exam another shot and I represent a demography of very high scores

Regards,
HK

P.S - sorry for keeping it long , i might have missed out anything , feel free to ask something if it is missing

Hello,

I hope you are well.

Would you be able to spend some time evaluating my profile and recommending some top schools that I should focus on?

GPA: 3.5 (from a business school in Hong Kong; majored in Finance; graduated in 2012)
Citizenship: India but have been living in Hong Kong for ~9 years now
Work: 6 Years (by the time I enroll) of institutional business development for a top investment bank (MS/GS/JP)
GMAT: 710 (Q48/V38/IR3/AW5); this is my biggest worry.

Other points to note:
- Have shown a 'habit of leadership' throughout life (high school, university, and work); see below.
- School Captain
- Overall Student Life Award at university for leadership and community integration
- Officially recognized as one of the most promising juniors in Asia (elected to sit on multiple leadership committees)
- Became responsible to cover the largest institutional clients in Asia just after 2 years at work (based on performance); our coverage even got recognized with a "best client service" award by the client directly.
- Specially selected by our international CEO of our business to lead a project based out of Asia
- Have gone through exceptional circumstances back home to reach where I am (none of my parents are educated, extremely poor background but went to one of the best high schools in Delhi, Dad passed away at an early age)
- Worked part time during university to support myself
- Don't have exceptional community service but actively mentor students at my secondary school back home and juniors at university)
- Trained for and ran a marathon
- LGBTQ
Would appreciate your thoughts on (apologies, in advance, for the long list of questions):
1) I have taken the GMAT multiple times but I am unable to do better under time constraints (and historically, this has been the case too). Is there a way I could address this? I am confident that I have the intellectual horsepower (at least for business school) when time is not a constraint.
2) What would be the ideal short-term goal for me to highlight? I am afraid that my real goal is too...different from what my current background would permit. Should I stick to a goal in the investment management industry alone? I understand that AdComs think carefully about whether a candidate will be able to achieve their immediate goal.
3) Given the Indian citizenship (Hong Kong resident for 9 years) and a relatively low GMAT, should I even target the top 10 schools? Ideally, I would really like to make it to a top 10 US school - don't want to spend USD 250k(!!) anywhere else, really - but I am conscious of the competition from Indian male candidates.
4) Should I have one recommender from London and one from Hong Kong? Or do you think it would be better to have both from Hong Kong (since AdComs prefer to have people working close to you)?
5) Any 10 US-based school that you would recommend for someone who wants to return to Asia? I don't want to work in the US.

Thank you your thoughts, in advance!

Hello,

I would appreciate it if you could evaluate my profile and provide feedback. Thank you!

Currently, 26yr old Asian American Male. 27 at Matriculation.

College- 2 yrs at community college (3.8 GPA), then 2 years at UC Riverside (3.15 GPA). Combined GPA ~3.5. GPA fell at UCR due to familial obligations of taking care of a sick relative. Will use optional essay to discuss this.

GMAT: GMAT Prep Test Score of 740 (49Q 41V) Let's assume I will score between 720-740 on the real test.

Work Exp
1.5 yrs- Wealth Advisor at Guardian Life. My team and I specialized in working with business clients on insurance and investment programs, corporate tax planning, and business succession planning. I took this role out of college to really strengthen my soft skills (boardroom presentations, relationship building, communication, etc..). I am a huge believer in working on my professional skills and at the time, my soft skills were lacking in my opinion.

What will be ~3.5 yrs (at matriculation) as a analyst in Product Management at a Top 15 P&C Insurance Company (~$4B in revenue). I love the work I do. This role marries two interests of mine- data analytics and leading cross functional executive level projects within the company. I have plenty of quantitatively-backed examples of the impact I have had. The P&C insurance industry is going through a transformation and it will be heavily disrupted within the next 10-15 years by autonomous vehicles. I aspire to be a leader of a top 5 insurer in the long run and guide the industry through the changing landscape.

Extracurriculars: Vice Chair of a Young Entrepreneurs non-profit organization for 4 years. I was brought in to grow the membership base, and I was able to grow it from ~300 to now over 2,400 members. We provide entrepreneur education and community to grow and collaborate. I also started a volunteer program within this organization and we have volunteered over 3,000 hours at local food banks, beach clean ups, Easter egg hunts, soup kitchens, local libraries, etc..

Organized a basketball team through work. We play in a local men's league. I will somehow incorporate the importance sports (and basketball, specifically) has had in my personal and professional development over the past 18 years.

United Way Rep for 2017. Organized fundraisers and food drives at work. Launched our first Annual Silent Auction which raised more money than any other event.

Short-Term Goal: Join MBA Leadership Development Program at Liberty Mutual Insurance

Target Schools: Columbia, Yale, Kellogg, Ross, Fuqua, Darden, Cornell, NYU, UCLA. I will shorten this list but those are the schools I have an interest in.

Hi MBA Prep School,

I'm considering applying in round 1 this year for full-time MBA programs enrolling fall 2019 and would love to get a profile evaluation and general thoughts on my potential career path. Any evaluation or advice you could give me would be much appreciated. Also curious if I'd gain anything from waiting another year, getting some more experience in my current role and getting some more community involvement.

White male, 26 years old

Education:
"Southern Ivy" (Duke, Emory, Vandy, etc.), graduated in 2014, Mathematics and Economics BA, GPA: 3.25 (started out pre-med which did not go well. Started to do better when I switched to math and econ, but suffered family tragedy fall of senior year which hurt my grades and recruiting as well)

GMAT:
770 (50Q/46V/8IR/5AWA)

Work (all at private, family-owned diversified holding company with $20B+ revenue):
-1 year as a business analyst in the Operational Excellence department in the automotive division. Acted as a liaison between business operations and IT development for the development of enterprise mobile applications, completed heavily statistical analysis to complete the business cases for these applications as well as justify a multi-million dollar acquisition, created operational tools for field use and trained several GMs on their use.
-2 years as a manager in the Financial Planning and Analysis department in the same division. Promoted to manager 3 years ahead of schedule for being recognized as a top performer. Managed a contractor and intern. Currently in charge of budgets and forecasts for several smaller portfolio businesses and on the leadership team of these businesses to provide insights that drive strategic decision-making.
-2 years (at matriculation) as a senior analyst in an elite corporate strategy & development group at the holding company level responsible for portfolio management, M&A, diversification strategy. So far led primary due diligence for several minority investments as well as played an integral role developing a strategy for the Company's extension into the clean technology industry (renewable energy, food and agriculture, water conservation, etc.). Interface regularly with C-level leaders, board members and external parties (banks, PE firms, Consultants, VCs)

Extracurriculars:
-Pro Bono consultant at an eCommerce retail store, creating the business plan, social media marketing strategy, and pricing methodology
-Half marathon participant in the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society's Team In Training program. Raised $2000 for cancer research
-Finalist in my company's internal StartUp business plan event
-Mentor at Big Brothers/Big Sisters Atlanta

Post-MBA Goals:
Ultimately I want to become the CFO of a well-funded start-up in my current industries of expertise (Cleantech, Auto). To get there, I want to work in Finance at one of the external parties I regularly interface with (PE or VC if possible) unless the opportunity presents itself to be a finance leader at a start-up right out of my MBA. I think working in M&A at a particularly flexible, family-owned Strategic provides a different, interesting perspective.

Schools under consideration:
I have two routes I'm considering, since I actually really like my current job:
-Shoot for the stars (Harvard, Stanford, Wharton, Chicago) where I think the the value would justify leaving my current role and paying the tuition
-Go to the one year MBA at my local university (Emory, where I think I can get close to a full scholarship), continue working part-time or take 1 year off and come back to my current role.

Thanks in advance for your help!

Hi,
I just sat for my GMAT and scored a 650(46Q,33V)(IR 5).
I have a 3.5 year work experience, including 2 years in my own start-up. Strengths and Areas of Exposure include Sales, Marketing, Ops. And, all of the experience is focused on the real estate industry.

I have a double graduation in Business(GPA 4.0) and Law(GPA 3.2), which was pursued simultaneously with full time work.

What kind of colleges should I be looking to apply to for fall 2019? I'm comfortable with colleges in Asia, Europe and North America.

• Will be joining a Fortune 500 technology company in a Sales role next month
• All above work locations in India

International exposure details:
• During my work experience at the niche boutique consulting firm, I worked with US-based tech law firms & US-based Fortune 500 tech companies to deliver ROI on tech intellectual property & perform due diligence. Other academic achievements:
CAT 2011 (Common Admission Test - India)
Taken on Oct 2011: 99.65 Percentile
Number of test takers - 189,000

AIEEE 2005 (All India Engineering Entrance Exam)
Taken on May 2005: 98.81 Percentile
Number of test takers - 800,000

Do you think I stand a chance of INSEAD interview & admit, or am I being too ambitious (given my lack of direct international work ex & above average 8.5 years current work ex)?

Can you also please suggest other B-schools as well (both Europe & US), given my profile & aspirations of MBB consulting?

Open to doing a brief pre-MBA internship or stint in a consulting/strategy/EA to CXO role once I get an MBA admit, to increase my chances of a shortlist with MBB consulting.

Given a choice, I would prefer a 1-year MBA (since I’ve already done a 2-year MBA), but open to a 2-year MBA if the internship helps pivot from sales into consulting/strategy.

Looking forward to hearing your feedback,

Thanks much!
