Dear Members,

We recently organized a chat session with UVA Darden Admissions Team. In the event Ms. Kristen Egan, Assistant Director of Admissions at UVA Darden, spent some time with GMAT Club members in our chat room to answer their questions about Darden MBA program.

For our friends who could not attend the event, here are some key questions and Admission officers' replies to them. For those who want to read full discussion, session transcript is attached to this post.

Wize47: Could you please tell us more about the optional essay? What an application should mention in it? What does admissions committee look for?
Kristen: The optional essay should really only be used to explain any areas of your application that we may have additional questions about - i.e. a gap in your employment, why you may not be able to choose your current supervisor as a recommendation writer, any further explanation that you want to provide on an area of your previous academic record, etc.

Neo656: I am R1 applicant. I have seen a lot of data on Darden's website with regard to entrepreneurship. Quite a variety of electives, iLab incubator, club and Venture Capital bootcamp. Can you please reflect upon the general mindset of student community with regard to entrepreneurship?
Kristen: The entrepreneurial community here is thriving and we offer a variety of opportunities to start or support new or early stage ventures. You can explore more here: https://www.darden.virginia.edu/web/MBA/ ... ship/home/ You can learn about our iLab here: https://ilabatuva.org/
I would also encourage you to connect with our Entrepreneurship and Venture Capital Club to learn about the different events they host throughout the year.

Nitish Gera: My question is regarding the MBA Loan Program for international students. Is it going to be there this year too? Where can I learn more about this option?
Kristen: Yes we will still loan options for international students. You can find out more about the Discover Custom Graduate Loan program here: https://www.darden.virginia.edu/web/MBA/ ... -Programs/

Jain Udit: How do you see an applicant who has a vast international experience vis-a-vis a candidate that has little?
Kristen: We have a very strong global community here at Darden and are looking for applicants who are excited to join our global network. Having international experience is not a requirement, but you should be able to demonstrate an interest in working with diverse teams. Darden offers a number of global opportunities that you can learn more about.

Nitish Gera: how strong is the community outreach at Darden? Do students regularly support small businesses in Charlottessville or nearby VA to accelerate their growth/revenue?
Kristen: Darden is very connected to the surrounding Charlottesville community. Our consulting club often takes on projects with local businesses. The iLab is open to Charlottesville community members as well.

Vicahl: Are there any specialized courses/opportunities at Darden to prepare a student for a management consulting ?
Kristen: Yes there are a variety of electives to choose from. There are a variety listed here for consulting: https://www.darden.virginia.edu/web/MBA/ ... onsulting/ Strategy Consulting is an optional concentration.

Samm: how good is the general management curriculum as compared to say finance or marketing?
Kristen: Darden is well known for being a top general management program. All of our classes are taught through the case method giving you the opportunity to discuss 500-600 cases by the time you graduate.

Pleezy: Can shed some light on what happens after an application is submitted? How many readers will be looking at it? How many are going to be selected for interviews, and how many are eventually admitted in each round?
Kristen: Once our first application deadline hits all applications will be divided among our committee. An application will be thoroughly reviewed by multiple members of our committee. Our interview process is by invitation only. The percentage of interview invitations varies each year and each round, but we will extend interview invitations up until our decision release date in December.

Nitish Gera: Kristen, how soon can we expect interview invites after October 10th?
Kristen: We will begin reaching out around end of Oct./ early Nov. to schedule interviews and will extend invitations up until our decision release date on December 17th.

FROM Darden Admissions Blog: $2 Billion Investment Made by Alumnus-Led Company Expected to Create 2,000 Jobs in Virginia
Recently a Chinese company, Shandong Tranlin Paper Co. Ltd. — chaired by CEO and Darden alum Jerry Zhiyuan Peng (MBA ’03) — announced a $2 billion economic development investment that is projected to create 2,000 new jobs in Virginia.  Tranlin developed an environmentally sustainable process that involves making paper from agricultural residuals and turning the waste byproducts of the paper-making process into organic fertilizer. The investment will mark the inception of Tranlin’s first U.S. manufacturing operation, a major step for the thriving global company.

Peng commented, “The core of the Tranlin model and history can be found in three words that I believe are the future of the Chinese economy and business: innovation, sustainability and entrepreneurship.”

The business values embedded in these three words receive heavy emphasis in the Darden curriculum and are a major influence on the experience of many students.

Demonstrating the strength of the Darden network, Peng has already hired one recent graduate and brought on three current students as summer interns to play a role in this exciting endeavor.

FROM Darden Admissions Blog: Darden Students Tackle Education Challenges in Summer Internships
This summer, Darden students Rafe Steinhauer, Kat O’Neill and Gaines Johnson are interning at mission-driven organizations focused on Education. The three students are enrolled in the MBA/Master of Education dual-degree program “Innovation in Education Reform.”

This summer they are doing education internships at:

  • Building Excellent Schools, a Los Angeles organization that develops urban school leaders and helps establish high-performing schools in America’s poorest communities
  • Education Pioneers, a San Francisco-based organization committed to developing a pipeline of leaders to address the achievement gap in the U.S. education system.
  • The Parthenon Group, a Boston consulting firm whose client list includes an education technology company that aims to create classroom assessment and teaching solutions for classrooms across the United States.
“I came to this degree program with an inspired passion to pursue a career in education specifically addressing inequity in the U.S. education system,” O’Neil said. “In my work this summer, I am continually inspired and motivated by the individuals in Oakland working tirelessly to improve education for their students, which is by no means an easy task, but a critical one nonetheless.”

The MBA/M.Ed. program is offered through a partnership between the Darden School of Business and the Curry School of Education.  It is designed to teach students how to apply business principles to devise solutions for challenges facing education.

Read the full story on the student’s unique experiences and visit the Dual Degrees page for a complete list of dual-degree programs available at Darden.

FROM Darden Admissions Blog: Consulting in Indonesia: An International MBA Experience
Global Field Experiences (GFEs) are MBA electives that give small teams of students the opportunity to provide consulting services to an international company or organization. In these term- or semester-long projects, students work with a member of the Darden faculty to tackle real business problems and propose solutions for their client.

At the beginning or end of each course, you will visit the company on location to build on-the-ground knowledge and to scope the issue at hand. In the video below, Catherine Manfre (MBA ’14) discusses her GFE experience in Jakarta, Indonesia providing consulting services to an agricultural company. While in Indonesia, she had the opportunity to interview different stakeholders to learn more about the company’s impact on the surrounding village.
