Essay Questions

Required Short Answer Questions
Instructions: Answer all 3 of the following questions. For each question, respond in 500 characters only (the equivalent of about 100 words).

  • What are your short-term goals, post-MBA?
  • What are your long-term goals?
  • Life is full of uncertainties and plans and circumstances can change. As a result, navigating a career requires you to be adaptable. Should the short-term goals that you provided above not materialize what alternative directions have you considered?

First required essay: 25 random things about yourself
Instructions: Present your response in list form, numbered 1 to 25. Some points may be only a few words, while others may be longer. Your complete list should not exceed two pages.

For context: Fuqua believes different types of people, points of view, and experiences bring out the best in everyone. And above all, we place a premium on succeeding while making a positive impact on businesses, organizations, and the world. These ways of thinking set the Duke MBA experience apart, and this concept extends beyond the student body to include faculty, staff, and administration. When a new person joins the Admissions team, we ask that person to share with everyone in the office a list of "25 Random Things About Yourself." As an Admissions team, we already know the new hire's professional and academic background, so learning these "25 Random Things" helps us get to know someone's personality, background, special talents, and more.

In this spirit, the admissions committee also wants to get to know you–beyond the professional and academic achievements listed in your resume and transcript. You can share with us important life experiences, your likes/dislikes, hobbies, achievements, fun facts, or anything that helps us understand what makes you who you are. Share with us your list of "25 Random Things" about YOU.

Second required essay: The Fuqua community and you
Instructions: Your response should be no more than two pages in length.

Fuqua prides itself on cultivating a culture of engagement. Our students enjoy a wide range of student-led organizations that provide opportunities for leadership development and personal fulfillment, as well as an outlet for contributing to society. Our student-led government, clubs, centers, and events are an integral part of the student culture and are vital to providing you with a range of experiential learning and individual development experiences.

Based on your understanding of the Fuqua culture, how do you see yourself engaging in and contributing to our community outside of the classroom?

Optional essay: Tell us more
If you feel there are circumstances of which the admissions committee should be aware (such as unexplained gaps in work, choice of recommenders, inconsistent or questionable academic performance), please explain them in an optional essay.

Please do not upload additional essays or additional recommendations in this area of the application, and limit your response to one page.

Hi All,

I am not sure if this group is still active. Is anyone applying for the EA?

Per decision tracker stats, there are around 35 users who are applying in EA round. Come on EA folks! Show yourself. Let's have some fruitful conversation on various application components.

Question for anyone applying EA. Have you been able to start your application yet? I created an account but I can only start an application for the online degree and executive MBA. Am I missing something?

And I'm in for EA! Just submitted last night and it was incredibly scary to hit submit. :-D

I am visiting campus for an EA Interview in two weeks. Anyone else doing EA Interviews?

Is there any chat session planned with current Alum? or with the admission team?

I have a question related to the character count of 500 for each short-form essay. Microsoft word shows two different character counts. The first type considers spaces a character. The other removes spaces from its count.

Should I consider a space a character?

The character count includes spaces. You will find this out once you fill out the official application.

Anybody else have issues with the "professional experience section?" I have worked for the same company since undergrad, so when it asks to describe my last three roles I don't have an opportunity to do so. I emailed but got no response...I have been waiting to submit.

Looking at Duke if Booth, Cornell and LBS/Columbia fall through. I have interviews with Cornell and Chicago so I am hopeful but in reference to your question on the EA, I have already taken it and received a 150. I can give other details toward my app or myself if that helps give context to what gets you an interview. I may not be the best example.

In for EA! Good luck everyone

Hello good folks,

Where in the online application form can i submit my essays. I could not find it in my online application form (which is very weird). Is it an anomaly with me or am I missing something?

Regards,
SG

It's definitely in the application form. In the menus on the left, there's a section for essays which will allow you to upload your essays.

If I recall correctly (I can't get back to that since I've already submitted), the essay menu item was right before recommendations.

Did anyone receive a confirmation email from Duke when you submitted your application in the early action round?
I did not receive any and I got no response from the adcom.

I received a email several minutes after submitting confirming my submission. Nothing specific about EA though.

Hi all,

I wasn't able to submit EA b/c of recommender delays. Fortunately, my recommender got in his letter this weekend. There was an extension on EA through September 17th...is it a bad look to submit EA now with the deadline extension? It was extended for the Hurricane (which, as a CA native does not effect me).

I don't think it's bad, but where did you get this information? Their website still reflects 12th September as the EA deadline.
