Greetings Nikhil and nepr9 . Hope you all are doing good. I had a question regarding the Essay 1 of the Kellogg Application. I need to know that the example we have to present, how back can it go? I have a good example from my current job on a project that I have initiated at my workplace to counter the effects of the great resignation. But I feel that I have an even more impactful story from my class 10th as the Head Boy when I brought a huge cultural shift in my school that has lasted till date. This story can demonstrate my empathetic side which my work story fails to do. So what is the recommended experience to share in your opinion?

let me put my 2 cents. I was on the same boat , while working on the Kellogg application. It’s not mandatory that response must be a professional story. It can come from all walks of life. But must be a “RECENT STORY” in my knowledge. As your 1st story reflects organizational level impact, you must mention it. Nikhil and nepr9 can share their views. I hope this helps.

You might work in the head boy story in one of the video responses if appropriate

Jun 26, 2022

Thanks for your question, Shivanshu97. Yes, I agree with indonihon. Having a recent story is definitely a plus but see if you can use the head boy story in the video essays and/or the interview if possible since you are highlighting great cultural impact

FROM NETWORKING TO ACCEPTANCE

Networking for your MBA application helps you foster relationships, gain insights, and build your future before your first class even begins. In other words, networking for your MBA application means reaching out to a good mix of individuals that will help you rise above other MBA candidates. Your MBA application needs to prove that you are a good fit for your chosen business school’s program and campus culture. Engaging in conversations with these types of people is more than meaningful; it significantly enhances your candidacy:

1. Colleagues
Coworkers can offer you real-world insights on the MBA application process through their post-graduation experience, even if they attended a different graduate business school. Colleagues like your direct boss are also good professionals to ask for your business school letter of recommendation.

2. Administrators, teachers, and professors
Sit in on classes, chat with graduate business school administrators, and ask professors a bit about their curriculum and expectations. The more you know what a typical day is like on campus or within a virtual learning environment for your chosen MBA program, the more you can match your strengths to what the admissions committee is looking for.

3. Mentors
Similar to colleagues, mentors will help you gain the real-world experience you need to learn about in your chosen MBA program. Even better, these professionals can teach you how to network effectively. Remember to cast a large net and consider mentors who aren’t in your chosen field, as they can offer you insights and may pique your interests in areas you hadn’t considered before.

4. Current MBA students and alumni
These folks represent a segment of stakeholders that can help you truly understand a school’s culture and learn to “speak the language.” There is no one person who will guarantee your acceptance, which is why networking for your MBA application with MBA students and alumni is key.

5. Campus leaders
Explore student organizations on campus that interest you, then contact the leaders of these clubs. They are often energetic, welcoming, and well-connected people who can augment anything you’ve gleaned from a website or campus tour.

Here are few questions to ask current students/ Alumni:

School & Curriculum
• Describe your typical day.
• What are some of the best classes you have taken?
• How do you select what courses to take? Is there flexibility in what courses you can take? Are there courses you think are most helpful for students interning or recruiting full-time for your area of study (eg, finance, consulting, marketing, ops)?
• Do you feel the program is a better fit for students looking for a specific career? Do student preferences tend to learn towards a particular area?
• How would you describe the student community?

Internships
• From what you’ve seen, what types of intern programs/companies were students most interested in for their summer internship?
• When does the summer internship search begin and when does it end?
• What support does the school provide for finding an internship and understanding the internship search process?
• How did you prepare for your internship recruiting process?

Recruiting
• From what you’ve seen, what types of full-time roles were students most interested in? Was there a shift in what people were looking for in the summer internship to what they were looking for in full-time roles?
• How did most people find their full-time role (e.g., on-campus recruiting firms, off-campus recruiting, the extended school/alumni network, etc.)?
• Describe the networking opportunities available to help you learn more about your career options (e.g., job treks, student club-led activities, company-sponsored events, conferences, etc.)

Social
• What are the “fun” events that you should not miss out on (e.g., happy hours, formals, Olympics, follies, etc.)?
• What opportunities are there for students to work on-campus or off-campus while in school?
• What is something not mentioned on the school’s website that an applicant should know?

The Kellogg MBA: What You Need To Know

Founded in 1908, Northwestern University’s Kellogg School of Management is a global business school with a mission to educate, equip, and inspire leaders to wisely leverage the power of markets to create lasting value. Kellogg offers a top-notch business education setting, where students in cohorts of 493 on average will grow personally and professionally, in expected and unexpected ways.

The traditional two-year program offers students the flexibility to explore a variety of interests and disciplines while developing strong management and leadership skills. In addition to majors such as Accounting, Finance, and Marketing, Kellogg provides “pathways” designed to help students focus on a particular skill set or industry. Recently added pathways include Diversity, Equity and Inclusion, Technology Management, and Energy and Sustainability.

Kellogg values experiential learning and has many opportunities for students to gain hands-on real-world experience working with real clients. Experiential learning opportunities include the Private Equity Lab which offers internships with firms, the Growth Strategy Practicum which allows students to explore the challenges that growth-stage companies encounter, and the NUvention program and NUvention Medical program gives students innovation and entrepreneurial experience.

Throughout their educational experience, students can take advantage of Kellogg’s world-renowned Career Management Center with one-on-one coaching, workshops, a job board with more than 5,000 annual listings, as well as extensive alumni connections.

Kellogg values students who are fully engaged and “all in” with their student experience: specifically, people who will be high impact, low ego leaders who always look to elevate everyone in the room.  Along with GRE/GMAT scores, prospective students applying are expected to complete an interview, and video essays designed to get to know the personalities, values, and qualities of students that don’t come across on paper.

There are a number of global opportunities for students to immerse themselves in a culture outside of the U.S. and broaden their network significantly. Kellogg boasts one of the largest exchange programs, with 25 partner schools. Kellogg Worldwide Exploration Student Trips is one of the most popular global opportunities where incoming students, prior to beginning classes, travel abroad under the leadership of second-year students. There are also more than 120 student-led clubs and sends graduates to more than 500 companies worldwide.

25% of Kellogg’s grad students accept tech jobs after graduating, and graduates of the MBA have a good shot at working with the three largest employers of the program; Boston Consulting Group, McKinsey & Company, and Bain & Company.
