FROM CUHK: Business Lecture Series and Beta Gamma Sigma CUHK Chapter Honoree Award Presentation
With an aim to expand the horizon and provide meaningful career guidance for CUHK Undergraduate students, the Business Lecture Series invites guest speakers across different fields to share their life and professional experiences. Mr. Leong Cheung (BBA 1994), recipient of the Beta Gamma Sigma CUHK Chapter Honoree Award 2022, gave an inspiring lecture on how he intertwined business acumen with creating social value.

The Beta Gamma Sigma Honoree Award recognises individuals who have made significant contributions to business and society through their exemplary work. The award is given annually to a limited number of recipients through nomination and approval by the Beta Gamma Sigma Board of Governors.

Professor Lin Zhou, Dean of CUHK Business School, said in the welcome remark, “Mr. Cheung has inherited CUHK’s strong spirit of giving back. He is an excellent example of a service leader, driving different organisations to bring positive impact to society.”

Professor Lin Zhou and Dr. Fred Ku, Associate Dean (Undergraduate Studies) warmly congratulated Mr. Cheung for his outstanding performance and commitment to society.

Mr. Cheung walked the participants through his journey “From Profit to Impact” – how he navigated his career from business consultancy to managing manufacturing projects; and from co-founding a social enterprise to previously leading one of the world’s largest charities donors as Executive Director of Charities and Community at The Hong Kong Jockey Club.

Speaking of his experience from a business leader to an impact driver, Mr. Cheung encouraged the students to apply their knowledge of business management to tackle social challenges and make a difference in society.

“What you learn in Business School does not only come with a dollar sign. It also can be used to create social impact.”

Wrapping up the event, Dr. Fred Ku expressed his heartfelt gratitude to Mr. Cheung’s genuine sharing and the students’ enthusiasm in the Q&A session. To close, he encouraged the students to follow the footsteps of Mr. Cheung, “It is equally important that you give back to the community and help someone in need”.

Dr. Fred Ku, Associate Dean (Undergraduate Studies) delivered a closing address for the event.

FROM CUHK: Living in an AI-Powered Future Today
Despite the doubts he faced along the way, Nixon believes that action is the best affirmation of aspiration. With well thought out plans, he persuades his peers and partners to join him in his work to build the future.

Forging a New Path with Conviction
Nixon, a computer science graduate, has always been interested in tech trends. He knew early on that AI would be a major trend propelling human progress. For this reason, he joined various tech firms to gain experience while keeping an eye out for opportunities. Such an opportunity presented itself in 2020, and he seized the chance to join SenseTime.

According to Nixon, working in AI has catapulted him into the future: “While people talk about three-to-five-year plans, we cast our vision on horizons 10 years and beyond.” People outside the industry frequently dismiss AI ideas as being beyond the realms of possibility. It has not been easy to persuade investors either. AI projects often require astronomical sums of investment just to build the necessary infrastructure, as if validating the saying “You have to pay to play”. Continuous adjustments must be made along the way to keep up with the latest developments, and failures are unavoidable.

Nixon made the decision to join the industry not out of hope, but rather through research and data analysis. His science education helped him develop this rational approach, which he now applies to his projects. “AI development is never based on feelings or fantasies. The field places a premium on databases, and every project necessitates massive and systematic data collection, analysis and deployment in order to achieve precise technological results.” Nixon stated that it is critical to believe in one’s analysis and decisions in the moment, learn from failures and be courageous in innovation to become a leader in the field. Acting on this axiom, he experimented with starting up a company before joining SenseTime to learn the ins and outs of turning ideas into reality. “If you can’t accept failure, you’ll always follow trodden paths and proven formulas. And you’ll always be a follower.”

Nixon recognised AI’s meteoric rise and decided to join SenseTime in 2020 to help the company’s business and strategic development in Hong Kong.

Setting the Tone for the Future of AI
When Nixon joined the industry, AI was not as prevalent as it is today, and his primary focus was on communication and awareness building. With cloud computing and digital technologies increasingly permeating daily life in recent years, there has been concern about AI’s information security, potential to replace human workers and ethical use. “Every new creation goes through an evolutionary stage in which the benefits and risks appear irreconcilable. We must confront the core issues rather than avoid them.”

Nixon believes that the future of smart development hinges on people’s vision and openness. Because change is bound to happen, it is preferable to embrace it and prepare for it by increasing readiness and taking charge. “I don’t believe AI will replace human workers entirely. Rather, people who are unable to harness this technology will be replaced by others who are able to use it effectively.” He compared tech pioneers to Tang Sanzang in the novel Journey to the West, in which the Buddhist monk travels to Tianzhu to retrieve Buddhist scriptures. In addition to personally persevering in their arduous journey, tech pioneers must discover the qualities of their fellow travellers, allowing them to grow and manifest their strengths, in order to collectively turn aspirations into realities.

Nixon remarked that Hong Kong’s innovation and technology (I&T) development benefits from a unique combination of timing, location and talent. These favourable conditions will enable his team to go further. “The government is working in concert with national policies and promoting I&T growth in eight major directions. With the Greater Bay Area’s vast application scenarios and I&T support, as well as Hong Kong’s excellent inherent strengths, including having five universities ranked among the global top 100, we can definitely foster more success stories and propel AI growth.”

“I believe that AI will not replace human workers in the future, but that those who know how to use technology effectively will replace those who stop to rest on their laurels,” Nixon shared.
With Debate Comes Clarity
Nixon described his EMBA experience at CUHK as a period of personal growth and confidence building. He vividly remembered professors guiding students to share their thoughts with an open mind before examining the issues calmly and rationally. “It was like watching kung fu masters fight other masters in movies. Elites from different industries bring their best to the game, and the exciting exchanges would spark all sorts of new knowledge and ideas. It was great fun.”

He stated that the present age is one where “if you’re not moving forward, you’re falling behind”. Young people should strive to absorb more knowledge, embrace exploration opportunities and broaden their minds and experiences. “You’ll become firmer in your actions and beliefs after repeated validation, and you’ll find the right path forward.”

FROM CUHK: Elevating Business Education with Rigour, Relevance and Tireless Dedication
Dedicated to a Career in Education
Prof. Lee, who grew up in Macau, chose The Chinese University of Hong Kong’s (CUHK) Faculty of Commerce at United College for his undergraduate studies in 1963. Even as a student, he had already set his sights on contributing to Hong Kong’s business development and the continuous transformation of its industry. When he completed his undergraduate studies, Prof. Lee enrolled in the newly established Master of Business Administration programme.

After receiving his master’s degree in 1969, Prof. Lee turned down a lucrative business offer and worked as an assistant lecturer at Chung Chi College and began his lifelong career in education. His dedication and persistence in academic research soon earned him study leave and a doctoral fellowship from the United Board for Christian Higher Education in Asia, arranged via Chung Chi College. The fellowship allowed him to pursue a PhD in Marketing at Northwestern University in the United States. When he returned to Hong Kong, he continued to teach at CUHK’s Department of Marketing, progressing from assistant lecturer to professor of marketing. Furthermore, Prof. Lee became Dean of Business Administration (1993-1999).

Integrate Theory with Practice
Prof. Lee believes that “a clear and authentic vision can transform the world”.

Prof. Lee and his colleagues at CUHK Business School share a commitment to a business philosophy that integrates theory with practice and they are rooted in Chinese culture. Through their efforts, a succession of business elites has been nurtured and contributed to the development of China and the rest of the world.

According to Prof. Lee, a clear and authentic vision often has the power to transform the world, as demonstrated repeatedly throughout history. “Our former vice-chancellor, Prof. Charles Kao, discovered that optical fibre was the best medium for data transmission, and his invention has benefited the entire world. Zheng Guanying, realising that the decline of the late Qing Dynasty was due to a business slump, proposed a government-supervised, merchant-managed enterprise model that became a remedial solution for the country. Japan’s Fukuzawa Yukichi recognised the importance of business and business education. He founded Keio University, introduced Western economics and contributed to the Meiji Restoration.”

Prof. Lee has been invited to teach in executive programmes and serve as a consultant for organisations, including the World Bank, various financial, tourism, retail, advertising, chemical enterprises and industry associations. As he explained, “Business education emphasises the integration of theory and practice. I’m constantly interacting with business leaders and when appropriate providing consultation services to them. My goal is to ensure that our education is both rigorous and relevant.”

Steer a Steady Course for Hotel and Tourism Management Education
Prof. Lee’s foresight of Hong Kong’s need for economic transformation led him to recognise the importance of the tourism and related industries well before the city’s handover. As one of the most popular tourist destinations in Asia, Hong Kong was poised to benefit from the growing connection with Mainland China, opening of Chek Lap Kok Airport and booming of the aviation industry. In 1998, the School of Hotel and Tourism Management was established to provide world-class business management programmes focused on tourism and the service industries. Its mission is to meet the needs of the flourishing tourism industry in Hong Kong, Mainland China, Asia and around the world.

As the Dean of Business Administration at the time, Prof. Lee was a driving force behind CUHK’s Teaching Hotel Project, which was created to establish a teaching hotel and a teaching building for the School of Hotel and Tourism Management (SHTM). He led a delegation to the Cornell School of Hotel Administration to exchange ideas and share experiences. In 2001-2012, he was appointed director of the SHTM, where he spearheaded the school’s efforts to cultivate tourism management professionals who are conversant with both business theory and practice and proficient in regional market cultures and international visitor needs.

The teaching hotel, the Hyatt Regency Hong Kong, Sha Tin, and the teaching building, named the Cheng Yu Tung Building, opened in 2011. Since then, they have provided state-of-the-art internship, teaching and research facilities for the School of Hotel and Tourism Management, CUHK Business School and other research institutes of the university. The Project launched a new chapter of hotel and tourism management education in Hong Kong.

Envision a Future Powered by Advanced Business Education
With China’s rapid economic growth in recent decades, the mainland’s and Hong Kong’s business and management prowess has taken the lead in Asia and continues to have a positive impact on the rest of the world.

“By the time we celebrate our 100th anniversary, I expect CUHK Business School to be on a par with the world’s most advanced business schools.” Having devoted his life to the research and development of business education, Prof. Lee hopes that CUHK Business School will continue to play a pivotal role in the development of business education in Mainland China and Hong Kong.

Prof. Lee (right) has nurtured generations of outstanding leaders over the years, including Peter Hung (left, BBA in Marketing 1980), President and Chief Representative of Forbes Global Holdings.

Hosted by CFA Society Hong Kong, the annual competition offers university students hands-on mentoring and intensive training in company financial analysis. Working in teams, participating students took the role of research analysts and were assessed based on their ability to evaluate a stock, compose a research report, and present their recommendations.

This year, CUHK team clinched the title of the championship with their in-depth equity report on Chow Tai Fook Jewellery Group Limited and outstanding presentation among the six finalist teams. The team comprises five students from diverse disciplines, including Integrated BBA (IBBA), Global Economics and Finance (GLEF), Professional Accountancy (PACC), Economics (ECON) and Electronic Engineering (ELEG), which contributed to their well-rounded analysis.

The team attributed their success to humility, “We should stay humble to our teammates, competitors, and mentors. Winning is not the most important part of the competition; rather, it’s about learning and growing as individuals and as a team.” They also credited their achievement to the exceptional guidance from their mentor Mr William Leung and faculty advisor Dr Edwin Mok, who provided valuable insights and suggestions throughout the competition.
