Yes, volunteering is absolutely taken into account and appreciated. Most applicants have some form of extra-curricular activity that has an element of volunteering. It is even better if you have a leadership role in your volunteer work and if this volunteer work relates to your passions / interests so it forms a nice overall story.

Hi guys,

I'm finding it really difficult to figure out where I stand when it comes to applying to B-Schools for my MBA and since I do not have too many people around me for advice I'm really hoping that you would help me out by evaluating my profile. I'm most confused about selecting schools and also whether to concentrate on the applications or on retaking the GMAT. The following is my profile-

-28 y/o Indian Male (will turn 29 by the time I start in 2016)

-GMAT 710 (49Q, 39V)- I know its probably on the lower side for an Indian male applicant. Trying to figure out whether to concentrate on the apps or on retaking the gmat.

-Graduated in 2008 from a business school in UK with a degree in accounting and finance. Topped my degree in year one. Ended up with an upper 2.1 degree. (Non-Engineering education)

-planned on working in UK itself in order to get some international work ex but had to move back to India because of my fathers death (3 weeks after final term). Had to take care of family affairs (financial and emotional) so moved back.

-Have 7+ years of work experience.

-working as head of the business development and strategy implementation division of a firm based out of New Delhi, with interests across hydropower, textiles and education and annual revenues of over US$125m. Have worked across all 3 sectors. Currently leading a team in implementing the expansion/diversification of the education vertical. The project is at an advanced stage of implementation and the financial rewards from the project have already started flowing in. The idea for diversification was my brainchild and thus I was made the team leader of the project. I'm also the youngest at the firm at a senior managerial role. I've held leadership roles across all the 3 verticals. I regularly deal/interact with clients from all over the world and frequently visit textile marketing events across the globe. The firm however would be a relatively unknown to most people on the admissions team (Well known in India though)

-short term goal is to make a transition to a top tier management consulting firm within the strategy division and work in new geographies in Western Europe or North America. Long term goal is to take up a senior management role at a fortune 500 firm. In my current role I'm coming up with and executing ideas that lead to improvement in business process and create value for the firm. I think a career in consulting will be a reasonable sell as my STG.

-Extra curricular: work with one of the most prominent environmental NGO in the country. Have been closely associated with environmental research over the last 5 years. Also, Having lost my father to blood cancer I started a cancer foundation in his name and have raised over INR 2.5m which in turn is being used to help underprivileged patients in their treatment. Also organize an annual blood donation camp. I have also redrafted and implemented the corporate social responsibility charter at the firm with a focus on sanitation for the poor and improving female financial literacy. Finally I've also worked for a member of parliament from 2009-2014 on devising a plan for development in the members parliamentary constituency with a population of over 2m residents.

Target Schools- INSEAD, LBS, Columbia, Duke, Tuck, Darden, Cornell, Ross, Tepper, Emory, Olin, UNC, etc

Thanks

I’m currently a junior in college and am looking to apply to deferred MBA programs in January 2024. My profile will be given in future tense as I am currently on track to achieve all these goals. I am trying to gain an understanding of how strong my application will be for the main deferred MBA programs I am interested in. I have strong leadership positions on campus and lots of volunteering. I have a target GMAT score. I have a lower GPA, but the number doesn’t do the justice as my low GPA isn’t a B+ average but rather two bad years mixed with 3 years of perfection. My current summer internship is at a smaller consulting firm, but I have a consulting internship at a larger company upon graduation next summer. One of my recommendations will come from my economic professor who is a faculty advisor for one of the clubs I’m president for. My other recommendation will come from the VP (who recommended me for the job) of the small/midsize consulting internship I have this 2023 summer. I have not written any essays yet but am currently thinking about how to craft my profile into a compelling story. From college failure, to exceeding grades, extracurriculars, etc.

•My target programs include: Booth Scholars, Kellogg Future leaders, Yale Silver Scholars, Columbia, MIT, Wharton Moelis, HBS 2+2, Stanford GSB, Berkely HAAS, UVA Darden.
•My target career is in consulting

Profile:
•White Male, 22 years old, Florida
•Double Major in Economics and Sociology at a top 50 university, Cum Laude
•GMAT: 740+ *Side Note* I am currently looking to boost this score a little more to make up for my lower GPA.
•Cumulative GPA: 3.23 *Side Note* I did very bad my first two years in college during 2019-2020 and failed out from a rank 250 university with a 1.5 GPA in Spring 2021. I wasn’t passionate about my major, Covid happened, was working, and just generally didn’t have any long-term plans so I didn’t care about school. However, Fall 2021, I started back at community college, took 12 classes, made straight A’s in all of them, and graduated with my associates degree with honors. Once I got my Associates degree I got admitted into a Rank 50 university. Starting in Fall 2022, I took another 17 classes and made straight A’s in all of them. So upon my application, I am currently on a 29-class streak (85 credits) of 4.00 GPA straight A’s. So, my GPA has gone from a 1.5 to a 3.23.
My transcripts look like this: (Rank 250 University) ACDCDCUUUUFFWFFWC ------> (Community College) AAAAAAAAAAAA ------> (Rank 50 University) AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA

Extracurriculars:
•Entrepreneurship Club – Founder/President
•National Business Economics Association – President
•Student Government – Executive Branch Financial Assistant
•Financial Management Association - Member
•Foster Care Mentoring – 200+ Volunteer Hours
•Special Olympic Volunteering – 100+ Volunteer Hours
•University’s Scholar Society, University’s Leadership Honors Society, Economics Honors Society, Sociology Honors Society
•Quiz Bowl Academic Team – Top 5 Scholar

Work Experience:
•Summer 2023 consulting Internship at a small-mid size consulting firm (publicly traded, 150m Revenue, 1b market cap)
•Summer 2024 consulting Internship at a Fortune 500 company (Not MBB but slightly lower tier)

Entrepreneurial Projects:
•Created my own private software utilizing multiple programming languages that connected to the OpenSea API and automatically traded NFT’s on the OpenSea market, generated $135,000 in purchases and sales while maintain steady profit margins.
•Founded an Instagram Media Page that organically grew 40,000 followers, generated 50 million impressions and 35 million views on content, Collaborated with companies to generate revenue with sponsored posts/advertisements

Deferred MBA's have been a driving factor in my motivation for my grades, and extracurriculars. I passionately believe an MBA will accelerate me in the workforce and I want the security of having a degree from a top institution. I want to apply deferred so that I can have peace of mind going into the workforce after college knowing that I have grad school lined up. I also like the aspect that If I get denied from deferred MBA's I can apply again 2-5 years down the line for regular admissions with higher acceptance odds and more schools available. I'm all in on the idea of Business School and getting into a top institution has been a dream of mine ever since I started taking college and my long term goals seriously. I highly appreciate whoever is reading this as GMAT Club has been so helpful in guiding me, thank you and I look forward to advice of how strong/weak my application stands for deferred MBA programs. Thank you so much!!!!

Hi everyone, I am about to graduate from my undergrad, and the next phase of my journey is an MBA (that's how it looks like to me, I am open to advices on this). I am super passionate about finance - and have relevant experience in this domain. As a result, top finance schools are my target for an intake in September of 2026 (I am 21 now, would be 25 then) - need some advice on how I can best utilize the next 3-4 years to get myself ready.

Here's how my profile looks right now. I am due to graduate in 2023. I am a 21 year old Indian Male - aiming for an MBA admit in 2026

Academics: Majored in Business and Finance from the No.1 rated undergrad business college in the country. 98.5% in Grade 12 (Valedictorian). About to give my CFA and FRM Level 1s (I expect to be done with them by 2024). I gave my first levels of CA/CS, before deciding to drop out

Extracurriculars: I was the School Treasurer, headed the literary club in college, wrote and edited the college magazine, and co-authored 6 papers in finance and economics (this is where I was first introduced to Stern's rockstar professors). These papers are very quant heavy and focuses heavily on crypto, equity and debt markets.

Internship: 3 Months at a Big 4 doing supply chain consulting, 8 months as an investment analyst at a Singapore based VC fund (I was 1/14 members of the India team), 3 months as a investment analyst at a Buy-side Infrastructure PE major (office's first Pre-MBA Intern) and 5 months working with as an investment analyst at a advisory firm to Korean PE/VCs

Work Experience: I interned with and am about to join a renewable energy developer - I have project finance deal experience working with them, and can make financial models in project/structured finance from the ground up. This is my strong suite.

Certifications: I have a bunch of coursera certifications from major universities in econometrics, finance and valuations. But I do not feel these are of much value.

It would be great to know what I can do next to develop my profile for NYU Stern, or a strong finance school.

Thank you, and have a great day ahead.
