ISB PGP PROFILE EVALUATION : ISB

Jan 28 at 02:21am

Hi,
Looking for help with profile evaluation

32yrs old With 9+ years of software engineering experience. Worked for organisations like Microsoft Goldman sachs predominantly as a Lead Software engineer and looking to pivot into a tech PM role or if possible into VC firms.

GMAT - 720
Graduation-7.7/10
12th - 95%
10th - 89%

Short term goal - Tech PM / VC roles
Long term - CEO/CTO in tech.

Does ISB consider profiles like mine or should I look abroad? I will be applying in R1 2023. And can improve on GMAT to 730+ easily.

Thanks for sharing your basic profile details. On the outset, you seem to satisfy the academic credentials required by ISB. However, the overall application has multiple aspects that you would need to cover while building it up.

Keep in mind these aspects: your goals and the reasoning behind those, why are you looking for an MBA at this stage of your career, and how you expect ISB to help you out with those career objectives in mind.

Since you have quite a large experience, you should also be quite prudent with what you expect out of ISB. The normal career progression you will find in the career reports will most likely not apply to you. So make sure that you connect with ISB alumni who went in with high work exp to understand the challenges and opportunities associated with being a Senior at ISB.

Suggested plan of action: Talk to as many ISB alumni as possible. Prefer those who went in with high work exp, and with a similar profile as you.

Additionally, definitely look at other schools as well. Your long experience does make you an outlier, so your chances will be on the lower side for an admit. Take more shots.

Hello,

Roughly 6% of the class at ISB has a work experience of 8 years or more, so your 9+ years of work experience is not a limitation at all.

You can apply to programs abroad as well. In that case, it is best to share your resume with the school teams to learn from them how they see you fitting into their program. This is important in your case because your work experience exceeds the class average for many schools abroad, particularly in the United States.

Why not improve your GMAT score to 730+ if you can easily do so? It will definitely give you an edge.

All the best!

Dear drortho,

Above average profile as far as ISB is concerned. While 720 is a competitive score and a 10-point increase won't move your chances by much, what you need to think more about are the following:

1. Career Goals: Transitioning into any top VC firm directly after ISB with your profile is practically very difficult. So think of some other career goal that is more feasible for you. Ex. Tech PM, Digital Transformation Consulting etc.

2. Why an MBA now: How did you decide to pursue an MBA after 9 years of a successful career in software engineering? You will have to give a trigger that has motivated you to upskill. Ex. Layoffs in the tech industry and how career moves can become unpredictable.

3. How will you add value to the cohort with your average experience?

Our consultants, ISB alums, would be happy to help you with drafting compelling application for ISB. Reach out to us if you seek help closer to the application date.

Cheers and Wish you all the very best !!

Thank you all for your response. I am looking to graduate from PGP/MBA on Risk Management and Fintech. I have a prior experience working in Credit Risk technology and looking to build a service industry in tech catering to this niche domain. This will be in stark contrast to the existing tech service companies like TCS, Infosys who work with different clients across different domains.

Hi drortho hope this finds you well

Your profile is impressive. However, one crucial point to explain in your application is why you need an ISB PGP to transition to a tech PM role. Furthermore, as a relatively older applicant with several good accolades and brand recall on your CV, you will have to conduct your own due diligence on the prospects post ISB-PGP and then convince ISB that it will be able to add significant value to what you have already built over your rich decade of experience in the tech industry.
There have been cases in the past where Indian B Schools rejected applicants since they knew they couldn't provide a major benefit in terms of post-MBA/PGPx compensation. As a result, it is your responsibility to ensure that you explain clearly to the school what you expect from the program.

If you are interested in studying at ISB, use this time to network with companies where you want to work. Connect with ISB alumni or startup founders to get specific insights into the PM/VC positions you'd like to pursue later. Once the foundation of your application is solid, the rest will fall into place.

I like your vision for creating a service industry catering to the niche credit risk domain. Speak about the problem you hope to solve in your application and how you plan to offer specialized expertise and solutions that can help organizations make better credit risk assessments, streamline risk management, and improve their overall risk posture. If ISB feels you have a deep understanding of the credit risk landscape and the ability to scale a team with the right skill set, you will be able to convert an admit.

Feel free to reach out should you need professional guidance.

Best wishes
