That is the most important aspect business schools will evaluate you on. Hope you can reflect profoundly over it. Hey Swapnilgodawat,

Based on your academic and professional credentials, it is evident that you have a strong foundation to pursue an MBA from a top business school. Your GPA of 8.1 from Mumbai University and a GRE score of 324 are impressive indicators of your academic prowess, and the fact that you have completed 1/4th of your application shows your dedication and commitment towards your goals.

However, it is important to note that the application process is multifaceted, and success is contingent on a holistic perspective. Your work experience as a full-stack software developer at L&T, HTC, and currently in CitiusTech is impressive, but you need to articulate your roles and responsibilities, especially those that showcase your leadership and impact on the organization. Quantifying your achievements and describing the strategies you used to streamline processes and improve efficiency will make your profile more appealing to admissions committees.

Furthermore, top business schools look for well-rounded candidates, and it is important to highlight your extracurricular activities, achievements, and impact on society. Your experience as a Marketing Head in the E-cell Committee, Computer Secretary, and working in a marketing committee in college should be emphasized. Be sure to showcase the events you organized, the number of students you led, and the activities that impacted people's lives.

Your volunteering activity with the NGO - Robin Hood Army - is another area where you can highlight the outcomes and social causes you worked on. It demonstrates your commitment to social responsibility and community engagement, traits that are highly valued by business schools.

Finally, it is important to keep in mind that deferred MBA programs are meant for students who are in their last year of undergrad. As you have completed your undergraduate studies and have four years of work experience, a full-time MBA program is more appropriate for you. You can target a mix of dream and competitive schools and expect a good return on investment after graduation.

If you need more help, we'd be happy to set up a call and give more pointers on how to improve your profile and the right schools you should target.

Hi! It would be great if you could evaluate my profile and suggest a good GMAT score based on it for a possible scholarship.

I am:
F, 28, applying for class of 2025
Not taken GMAT yet. Target > 700, reach 720

Work Experience:

1.5 years at a Chinese E-com giant’s subsidiary in a SA country. Started out as a Digital Marketing Associate and was soon handling category marketing for 2 categories which was 70-80% revenue for the company. I was promoted twice in that short period of time.I also helped the company transition through a buy-out from the marketing POV.

2 years ( by the time I apply) at one of the better Oppo brands - first as a Management Trainee in the online sales dept. and then in the branding team as a Senior Specialist. I have helmed big budget campaigns and won many awards externally and internally.

Education

Highschool with 73% taking biology and physics
Studied Business ( 7.0 GPA) on Ministry of External Affairs, India full scholarship for Undergraduate Program at a 2nd tier state university
Studied MBA (8.5 GPA) on Ministry of External Affairs, India full scholarship for Postgraduate Program at a 2nd tier state university

Extra-curricular

Started a club in highschool focused on social causes and engagement of students in social awareness for issues like safety and growth of children of prison inmates, environment, etc. Interviewed activists and published articles in the school magazine.

Organised football tournaments during college as a foreign student. I studied and lived with students from close to 55 countries at the time. I was also actively involved in integration of new admissions into the student life in the city.

I wrote and published papers in national journals during my MBA. I also helped faculties write business case studies.
I won a case study championship to land my first post-MBA job.

All scholarships I won were on a national level. Despite the pedigree not being refined, I competed on a national level to land those. Since they were government given scholarships, students are sent to state universities.

I have always been an avid reader and started a book club in my first job. Anywhere from managers to associates participated in it.

I will soon be joining my MBA college's alumni mentorship program.

Why a second MBA?

I want to transition from marketing great products to building those products. Product strategy is an area that I am increasingly interested in and an MBA that focuses on strategy will add immense value in terms of theoretical knowledge, exposure and network.

I am also aware of the value my existing MBA has in the market and I want to go beyond that to reflect what I am capable of. I feel restricted in my current roles. A global MBA with a scope of great networking should open doors for me that were not even visible some time ago.

I am not of Indian origin and hold a non-Indian, small country citizenship.

Hi,
A good GMAT score would be 700 plus, as high as possible (merit based scholarships are awarded to applicants with great acads and high GMAT scores). Your reason for the second MBA seems fine, you need to ensure that you tell a strong story through your essays and application.

Usually pursuing a second MBA a few years after your first MBA is reasonable, however, it is not clear from the information here when you graduated from the previous one. You could check the specifics in accordance with your career plans.

All the best!

Hey suyathis1,

Based on the information provided, it appears that you have yet to take the GMAT, but are aiming for a score between 700 and 720. If your preparation goes well and you are able to score above 690, this will greatly increase your chances of being admitted to top-tier schools. Your work experience of one and a half years at a Chinese e-commerce subsidiary in a South Asian country and your involvement in a digital marketing association are factors that will be taken into consideration post-graduation.

Your academic background is impressive, with a full scholarship for your undergraduate program and an MBA from the Ministry of External Affairs with a CGPA of 8.5. When targeting schools abroad, academics, work experience, extracurricular activities, and curricular achievements are all important factors that should be emphasized. Your extracurricular activities, such as starting a club in high school focused on social causes and issues related to children's safety, should be highlighted, along with any programs you organized that made an impact on children's lives.

In regards to pursuing a second MBA, you should consider emphasizing your desire for international exposure, further specialization in your chosen career field, and opportunities to transition from marketing to product design. Pursuing an MBA will provide you with the necessary exposure and specialization to help increase your career opportunities in this field. Your Indian origin and non-Indian small country citizenship can also be an added advantage to your profile.

It is important to focus on your essays and statement of purpose, as these will be key factors in the admissions process. Be sure to present a well-rounded profile that showcases your achievements and goals in a professional manner.

If you need more help, we'd be happy to set up a call and give more pointers on how to improve your profile and the right schools you should target.

Hi!

It would be great if you could review my profile! Thank you for taking your time!
I am planning to apply only once I hit 2 years of work ex (currently at 6 months). But wanted to get a sense of direction in the meanwhile. I am mainly insecure about my UG college. Not sure if it matters big time. Your input would be very helpful!

Undergrad: BBA in Finance from a T2 college affiliated to Bangalore University
Undergrad CGPA: 8.8/10

10th grade: 9.8 / 10
12th grade: 87%

GMAT: I have given many mocks. My score averages around 710.

Reason for MBA:

I want to move into Investment Banking. I am currently in Financial Planning & Analysis. This is where I found my passion for finance, working with numbers, and analyzing businesses. After having talked to many people already working in investment banking, I came to the conclusion that an MBA would be the best option to jump into the industry. The MBA would also help me in further advancing my career smoothly in the industry.

Work Experience:
Strategy Intern at a boutique consultancy firm [1 year]
Worked with a leading startup in the fashion e-commerce sector in a complete transformation of their organizational structure, creating OKRs for roles, and revamping their Performance Management Systems.

Worked with a famous Liberal Arts and Science University in India in initiating a service excellence strategy for the administration of the university.

Built a completely automated system by collaborating with HR industry experts and psychologists, replacing the previously followed manual process of evaluating the human resource of client companies as a part of revamping their HR strategy.

Worked with a famous Indian MNC involved in Steel Manufacturing in initiating a Women Empowerment program in the company as a part of their DEI strategy.

Associate Analyst in Reporting and Analysis at a Big 4 [6 months]
Worked with internal stakeholders in the US member firm to help cut costs and make critical decisions by producing financial reports based on business need.

Automated my personal scheduled financial reporting, cutting down approximately 16 hours of work (all reports combined per month) down to 5 hours.

Initiated and lead the internal report automation project.

Extra Curriculars
Head Coordinator of the Commerce & Management club in college
Developed case studies and conducted a national business case study competition.

Was also the lead of the Business Quiz team.

Lead Editor of the monthly college newsletter
Took the initiative of starting a monthly college newsletter. Headed it for 2 years till I graduated.

Volunteering
1.
Worked with a leading NGO from Bangalore in the education sector in partnership with Rolls Royce in organising a science fair for 12 government schools across Bangalore. The event had 32 students showcasing their scientific exhibitis.

Worked the same 12 government schools in developing free STEM kits for the students to improve their Science and Math skills.

2.
Currently volunteering a few hours in the morning 5 days a week with a famous NGO in the education sector in teaching math to kids from lower primary classes.

Achievements
Athletics - Record holder in my district for 2 years in Triathlon (2015-17)

Was the #1 in state-level Mridangam competition for 3 consecutive years (2016-19)

I would love to hear your honest feedback. Thank you.

Hi,
Evaluating your profile as below:

1. Academics - range between good to strong
2. GMAT - 710 is the school average so anywhere above that would be a strong score to go with (although 710 is also fine, given that it is one of the things evaluated in the process, not the only one).
3. T2 college - you have mentioned that as concern, I wouldn't see that as one. There's still a lot to your story over and above this.
4. Extracurriculars - Since you have still some time to go before you apply, try to add/ continue with some activities on this front. ( You have mentioned - Currently volunteering a few hours in the morning 5 days a week with a famous NGO in the education sector in teaching math to kids from lower primary classes. - which is good)
5. Work Experience: Associate Analyst in Reporting and Analysis at a Big 4 [6 months] - This work experience has a lot of takeaways professionally, however you need to evaluate if there is any skill upgrade that you need to transition to investment banking. This is a good time to build on those.

Keep up the good work. All the best!

Hi vaiware hope this finds you well

While it appears that you have solid plans to enhance your experience and become a competitive candidate, I feel you are better suited for a two-year MBA program than you are for the ISB PGP. A two-year MBA would provide you with better tools to establish a strong foundation and pursue IB roles. Although you can certainly crack ISB when the time is right, considering your age, experience, and academic background, a two-year MBA program would give you a reasonable amount of time to explore diverse opportunities, spread your wings, and leverage internships to advance your goals in IB. Additionally, it is worth noting that in one-year programs, you will be competing with highly qualified individuals such as CAs and CFAs, who may already have IB exposure and the desired academic background.

If you are flexible with your IB goals, ISB can be a good fit, otherwise, you will have to build a stronger case to justify the plan to transition to IB through ISB PGP to the admissions committee.

Best wishes

I want to move into Investment Banking. I am currently in Financial Planning & Analysis. This is where I found my passion for finance, working with numbers, and analyzing businesses. After having talked to many people already working in investment banking, I came to the conclusion that an MBA would be the best option to jump into the industry. The MBA would also help me in further advancing my career smoothly in the industry.

Hey vaiware,

Your CGPA is truly impressive, and your work experience is equally remarkable, demonstrating your adaptability and versatility. However, to create a standout MBA application, it is crucial to emphasize your specific accomplishments and the impact you have made in each role. Use numbers and data to make it even more compelling.

To highlight your leadership and impact at work, showcase your most significant achievements, such as leading a team of analysts to conduct a market research study for a top client in consulting, developing a social media marketing campaign that increased online sales and engagement in e-commerce, or implementing a new process improvement initiative that significantly reduced production time and costs in manufacturing. Such accomplishments demonstrate your ability to manage a team, work across functions, think creatively and strategically, and execute process improvements, making you a strong candidate for MBA programs.

If you are interested in investment banking, note that top MBA programs generally prefer applicants with three to five years of work experience. Pursuing a Master's in Finance program can be an excellent alternative for gaining specialized education in the financial industry and making yourself more attractive to investment banks like Goldman Sachs and Barclays. Highlight your relevant skills and experiences in your essays and recommendations, and consider pursuing internships or part-time work in finance to gain practical experience and showcase your dedication to the field.

Hello vaiware

Kudos to starting and planning early, this will put you in a good spot when you do choose to apply.
ISB will evaluate your candidature on primarily 4 factors-
1) Academic Potential- they want to ensure that you will be able to handle the academic pressure of the program (and also help bring up the avg GMAT score of the B-school :-)). Your past scores seem decent and any score above 710 will put you in a decent spot academically.
2) Work Ex- Unlike academics, work ex is not as straightforward to measure (5 years is not necessarily better than 4 years). What matter here is the depth and quality of work ex, but equally importantly how you choose to present the same (in your essays, interviews and LORs). Two people with exactly same background can present their work ex (or story) very differently and that can create all the difference (good or bad). You seem to have the right start- role, function, industry, exposure etc. Just ensure that you spend the next couple of years building strong career progression and achievements.
3) Diversity- ISB loves to boast how diverse their class is. You are going to spend more time with your batchmates than with professors or books and hence will learn more from each other. Diversity is proving how you will be a great and unique addition to the batchmates and how your peers will benefit by your presence (AKA- how will you add value to the experience of your batchmates inside and outside the classroom). You have an interesting list of activities that can help add diversity but the key here is to weave the right story (why are these activities relevant to the B-school application & experience and how will this help you add value to the batch). You have the right elements, need top tell a cohesive story around it.
4) Career goals- ISB wants to see a leader who has a 'clear' & 'realistic' vision of their career. You seem to have eyes set on the right goal, just need to ensure you convince the school how it fits in this journey.

Hello suyathis1

You check most of the boxes- Academics (decent past scores and target GMAT score), Work Ex (international ex helps stand out and achievements seem impressive too), Diversity (nationality and work ex both add diversity).
Trick will be convincing 2nd MBA and career goals- if you can build a strong narrative there, you have a decent shot.

suyathis1 wrote:Hi!

Hello Swapnilgodawat

To improve your profile (or to stand a good chance), you need to excel in four areas-
1) Academics- past scores are decent but the GRE is just about avg (a point below the avg of the school) and might make it hard for you to stand out considering the software background (you belong to the biggest and most competitive pool of applicants after all)
2) Work Ex- Shows potential, but will need to go in depth to understand the strengths and weaknesses (career progression and achievements will matter more than role and years in the said role). For instance, your 'Positions of Responsibility' and 'Extracurricular' sections are all about university or school activities and nothing around work ex (or during work years) and that show lack on focus on the most important element of the application- work ex. As much as the actual work ex what matters is how you present it, and that is what you will need to work on.
3) Diversity- Software background definitely makes it challenging to stand out, but some of the extracurricular/certifications etc do seem to interesting, but what is needed here is not a checklist, but a narrative- why are these event relevant to the b-school application, why should ISB be interested in these activities and how will these help you become a strong addition to the batch and add to the value of your peers inside and outside the classroom.
4) Career goals- a key piece of the admissions puzzle, clear and realistic career goals are what will set you apart from other candidates. Who is this leader who has a clear 5-10 year vision of their career and knows ISB is the best way to reach these goals. Unfortunately, information is missing here and you will really need to work on this.

You may want to read here on what factors work in a profile and here to add to your research on career goals.

Hi,

Going into some specifics for your profile:

1. Academic record: Your GPA is below the average for the school. However, the fact that you graduated from a top 20 global ranking university and received an academic scholarship for all four years, along with your involvement in co-curricular activities, makes you a strong candidate.

2. Test score: The GRE score of 319 (Q166V153) is not exceptional, you could try to work on this.

3. Work experience: Your work experience, including starting your own successful startup and showing rapid progression in subsequent roles is a plus. Your experience in both medium-sized and fortune 500 companies, combined with your entrepreneurial background, indicates a diverse skill set.

4. Co-curricular activities: Your involvement in projects related to sustainability and green technology, winning a government scholarship, and leading multi-disciplinary teams, all showcase leadership, problem-solving, and teamwork skills.

5. Career goals: Your desire to work in infrastructure consulting firms and to give back to your country is admirable.

I would recommend that you could try and work on improving the GRE score and showcase your experiences and achievements in the application to additionally compensate for the academic record.

All the best!

aayushlovelife Think I evaluated your profile on another thread.

Your profile is highly differentiated for ISB, but if it all comes down to stats, a GRE score of 319 may have some influence on your application decision.

Your credentials are good, particularly considering the substantial amount of experience you have studying and working overseas. In your application, you must show that you have a persistent interest in the sustainability and clean energy industry. A critical aspect of the application would be to defend how ISB PGP fits into your career trajectory between sustainability and Greentech and Infrastructure consulting. Since it's a relatively common mistake that applicants do not demonstrate adequate research on goals in the ISB application and in the interview, I strongly advise you to reason out well in your essays why you would be a good fit at these "Infrastructure consulting" companies that you are interested in. Your deep dive into your preferred post-PGP opportunities will further boost your confidence when it's time for the interview.

You may also look at industry-specific leadership development programs in the short to mid-term where you would be able to leverage your passion and prior experience. It is best to research what leadership programs in the sustainability infra sector recruit from their cohorts (Adani is a popular one).

Feel free to reach out should you need guidance.

Hello, Everyone

I'd like receiving views from current/ex ISB grads (and possibly from admissions team at ISB) on my profile. To follow my career ambitions, I've been exploring possibilities of doing an MBA, but only from a well reputed business school such as ISB.

Work experience:

2016-20
Infosys, Senior engineer

2020-23 (currently)
PwC, Senior Consultant

Education:
Class 10, CBSE (87%)
Class 12, CBSE (77%)
B.Tech (NIT Agartala) (8.3 CGPA, 2nd rank in our branch)

I've won many client recommendations during my stint at both the firms. I am fairly visible to the leadership team at my firm. Hopefully, I can draw decent recommendation letters from my contacts and manager. My clients have been from all around the world. I have exposure towards working with people from Germany, US, UK and a couple more European countries.

I've also worked as a Freelancer (Content writer) during my B.Tech years (all 4 of them). I've never received a review less than 4 stars from any of my clients.

My concern is that I dont test well in a time constrained environment. I've never really taken a GMAT mock test but most of the questions that people seem to solve so easily here, appear daunting to me. But I could gather a score of 600-700 in GMAT.

Currently, I play a senior role within my team at PwC, where I help my team mates with their professional matters. I also play an active part in recruitement for our team.

Why do I want to do an MBA? Honestly, I want to change my field of work. Areas such as finance, economics and business interest me. While I'm excellent at the work I do (IT consultant), I would like to explore other areas.

I'll be grateful if you can give a profile evaluation, based on a cursory glance of my profile.

Thanks!

Hello Debayan,

You have strong academics and a strong work experience. These are a plus for your profile. You can work on identifying the stories that help you demonstrate
your leadership skills from your diverse work experience.

As far as the GMAT is concerned, you would find a lot of great resources here on GMATclub itself and the more mock tests you write the lesser you will feel constrained.

The one year MBA provides ample opportunities to shift careers, do your research for the best fit and see what are the transferable skills you can identify from your previous work experience to achieve your researched goals. You can also consider building new capabilities to be able to utilise the MBA platform most efficiently to navigate the change you plan.

All the best!
