Profile Evaluation, planning on applying in a few years : Ask Personal MBA Coach

Apr 3, 2022

Hi everyone,

Thank you so much for your opinions. I'm in the very early stages of my MBA application prep but would like guidance on what I can do for the future.

Background:

Indian-American female (Raised in US so not international), 23. Undergrad: Top 20 Private School (Think Cornell, Rice, Vanderbilt etc.)

Work Experience:

About 2 years in large energy technology company. I am part of a three year engineering management rotational program so I've had experience in operations engineering and sales engineering so far.

Undergrad Stats:

Major: Chemical Engineering, GPA: 3.34

GMAT: 650(44Q/36V). Planning on retaking to getting a min of 680, ideally 700+

Post MBA Goals:

Strategy Consulting, maybe IB. I want to help companies with investments in energy technology for decarbonization as I've learned a lot about the challenges of doing so from my current company.

MBA Targets: Dream school is NYU Stern, but also considering schools such as Cornell, CMU, Duke, etc. Haven't given much thought to this yet so would like some advice here too.

Extracurriculars: Run a newsletter at my company for my program, part of a mentorship program to encourage girls to pursue STEM

Please let me know what I can do in the next two years to improve my profile! I am planning on applying once I have 4 years of work experience. Thanks!

Hi sashok98,

Thank you for your post. It is great to hear that you are getting an early start thinking about your business school plans.

Planning ahead for the next few years is one of the best ways to ensure that you are set up for application success. Personal MBA Coach offers early MBA planning services to help you navigate career and extracurricular decisions, build a target school list, and come up with a strategic plan to follow between now and the time in which you apply.

Looking at your current target school list and GMAT goals, you will certainly want to break 700 for a school like NYU Stern. While it is possible to gain admission with a below-average score if you come from a unique background or have an exceptionally strong profile, it is becoming less common to see large numbers of applicants with scores more than 20 to 30 points below average succeed. For reference, the average GMAT for NYU Stern last admissions cycle was 729.

Around a 700 could work for a school like Duke Fuqua, since they have a greater impact on social impact than the numbers. Thus, the GMAT tends to be lower (closer to 700 level).

Of course, test scores are not the be-all and end-all, as there are many other factors to focus on as well. We work with a lot of folks in the months and years ahead of applying and can tell you exactly what you need to do to begin strengthening your candidacy. The early planning clients do the best. Take a look at our early planning services to learn more.

Happy to discuss how we could potentially work together: scott@personalmbacoach.com.
