Current Industry: Tech Consulting
Previous Industry: Investment Banking at a Bulge Bracket Bank
International exposure: 10 weeks in London during Investment Banking. Regular collaboration on current work with European counterparts but currently located in India.

Cleared CFA Level 1

Undergrad: Engineering from an average Indian college with above average grades
Masters: MBA from an Indian B-School with average grades

Extra curriculars: Competitive sports person with regional and inter college wins | App development and Hackathons during undergrad | Trained in 3 Indian dance forms | Fundraising for an NGO during school | Leisure travel to 6 countries

Post-MBA goal: Consulting
Long-term goal: Rise up the ranks and drive transformation in my target industry

I applied to 6 US schools in R2. Currently waitlisted at an M7 and a T10.

I want to understand my chances for INSEAD and what factors can I leverage to differentiate my profile and strengthen my position.

Hi Blackbay92

First up, please do go through these two articles. They will help contextualize a lot of things.
https://www.gyanone.com/best-mba-admiss ... nts-india/
https://www.gyanone.com/international-e ... important/

On your profile:
- IB to Tech Consulting is quite a move. Were you in the FinTech/analytics space within IB? With experience in both investment banking and tech consulting, you can demonstrate a versatile skill set and adaptability. Make sure to highlight your achievements and contributions in both roles.
- You do have some international experience, which will help, but it is not substantial. Will need to understand your work and how closely you work in foreign markets to comment definitively on this aspect. The travel to 6 countries helps as well. Your collaboration with European counterparts can showcase your ability to work in cross-cultural teams and adapt to different working styles.
- ECA is good and INSEAD values that. Your involvement in competitive sports, app development, hackathons, dance, and fundraising activities indicates a well-rounded personality. Focus on the impact you made and the skills you developed through these activities.
- Your goals are not fully clear at this point. You seem to be coming from consulting and heading to consulting, and wanting to drive transformation in a target industry. Which industry is that? What will an MBA give you and what will INSEAD give you?
- CFA (L1) has minimal impact.

Hope this helps. Feel free to get in touch directly as needed, or to ask further questions here. Engaging with us further can help uncover tailored suggestions that align with your interests and passions.

I'd like receiving views from current/ex grads (and possibly from admissions team) on my profile. To follow my career ambitions, I've been exploring possibilities of doing an MBA, but only from a well reputed business schools.

Work experience:

2016-20
Infosys, Senior engineer

2020-23 (currently)
PwC, Senior Consultant

Education:
Class 10, CBSE (87%)
Class 12, CBSE (77%)
B.Tech (NIT Agartala) (8.3 CGPA, 2nd rank in our branch)

I've won many client recommendations during my stint at both the firms. I am fairly visible to the leadership team at my firm. Hopefully, I can draw decent recommendation letters from my contacts and manager. My clients have been from all around the world. I have exposure towards working with people from Germany, US, UK and a couple more European countries.

I've also worked as a Freelancer (Content writer) during my B.Tech years (all 4 of them). I've never received a review less than 4 stars from any of my clients.

My concern is that I dont test well in a time constrained environment. I've never really taken a GMAT mock test but most of the questions that people seem to solve so easily here, appear daunting to me. But I could gather a score of 600-700 in GMAT.

Currently, I play a senior role within my team at PwC, where I help my team mates with their professional matters. I also play an active part in recruitment for our team.

Why do I want to do an MBA? Honestly, I want to change my field of work. Areas such as finance, economics and business interest me. While I'm excellent at the work I do (IT consultant), I would like to explore other areas.

I'll be grateful if you can give a profile evaluation, based on a cursory glance of my profile.

Thanks!
Debayan

Hi debayanb

- Can you shed more light on your international experience? While you have 7+ years of good professional experience, it is not clear if that experience is global or whether you are simply working with global colleagues in India.
- Your desire for change is good, but you will need to ultimately fructify it into a solid goal. Which role/industry (could be more than one at this stage) are you interested in?
- On the GMAT, you might consider working with a 1-on-1 coach. Such a coach can usually provide more customized guidance that would not be available cohort-based programs or in self-study.

I'd love an objective an honest opinion based on my profile for INSEAD.

Background:
Born and raised in Malaysia, but I now also have an Australian passport.

Education:

Undergraduate at a private university in New York 3.5 GPA majoring in Finance
Very active at extra curricular (I was one of those kids)
- President of Finance society
- Student Government rep for the business school
- Resident Assistant

Work experience (10 years):
Tech Startup - Chicago (3 years)
- Started career in Chicago at Tech consulting startup as a Software Implementation consultant. Shortly after I moved onto another tech software company that was acquired by Oracle.
PwC - Sydney (6 years)
- Moved to Sydney, and joined PwC in their data analytics team as a Senior Consultant.
- Promoted twice in 5 years to Manager and then Senior Manager
- Did a 4 month secondment to Vancouver for a special project as well
PwC - London (just under 1 year currently)
- Currently on a 2 year secondment to the PwC London office.
- Senior Manager in their Digital Product space, creating custom software solutions + managing digital products.
- Heavily involved in business development and growth
- Very active in roles beyond day-to-day delivery (PwC's People Council, I&D council, LGBT leadership group)

Extra:
Part of the LGBT+ community. Volunteered as the Director of Data at a LGBT+ not for profit for a year. Very active in PwC's LGBT people group.

PostMBA goals:
2 possible directions
1. Move into a little bit more of strategy consulting in the tech space, rather than just designing and implementing -- especially in the government/policy/health area
OR
2. Eventually be Chief Product Officer at a tech startup. I've always been a fantastic executor, never really saw myself as the ideas person, but the person that can bring anything to life and execute it to perfection.

Biggest weakness(?) in my profile:

Age and Years of experience. I'll be 35 by the time the programme starts, and I would have 10+years of experience. But I really really want to immerse myself with 'people like me' - that are international, 'crazy' and motivated people everyday. I've just need that burst of excitement and enthusiasm again with a diverse set of people around me thats so eager to learn and grow because I feed off of energy like that.

Biggest strength:

My diverse and vast experience, having lived and worked in Malaysia, Singapore, New York, Vancouver, Sydney and now London. I have proven that I can adapt to a multicultural environment and thrive. I have much to give back as well, especially in the tech side of things and in design thinking which is something I do at PwC now. I'm not one of those that just sit back, bury my head in books and study -- but I'm one of those that would absolutely raise my hand and voice my opinion, very much proven from my involvement beyond my role at PwC and during university (and truthfully all my live - just a very vocal person). Just can't wait to feel like the stupidest person in the room.

Questions:
Apart from rating my profile, I am currently working on the GMAT, I'll aim for something around 700, but what are some of my chances paired with a rough GMAT score?

Thank you all in advance! Just need a shot of encouragement and honesty :)

Hi IntMBA24

Your profile is quite impressive, and it's evident that you have a diverse range of experiences that will contribute to INSEAD's dynamic environment. Now, let's evaluate your profile and provide some advice:

Strengths:

International exposure: Your experience living and working in various countries will be a significant asset at INSEAD, which values a global mindset.
Leadership and involvement: Your active participation in extracurricular activities and leadership roles in both your undergraduate and professional life demonstrates your commitment to personal growth and community engagement.
Career progression: Your promotions and secondments within PwC show that you have a strong work ethic and have consistently performed well in your roles.
Diversity and inclusiveness: Your involvement in the LGBT+ community and volunteer work adds a unique dimension to your profile, showcasing your passion for promoting inclusiveness and equality.
Areas to address:

Age and experience: While you have more work experience than the average INSEAD candidate, your diverse background and clear goals can help you demonstrate the value of pursuing an MBA at this stage in your career.
GMAT: Aim for a score of 700 or higher to remain competitive in the applicant pool. Given your strengths, a solid GMAT score would further bolster your chances.

Advice:
Emphasize your post-MBA goals: Clearly articulate how INSEAD's program will help you achieve your goals in strategy consulting or as a Chief Product Officer at a tech startup. This will showcase the value of the MBA for your career progression.
Highlight your adaptability: Emphasize your ability to thrive in multicultural environments and your eagerness to learn from diverse perspectives. This will help demonstrate your fit with INSEAD's culture.
Showcase your unique contributions: Your background in tech and design thinking, coupled with your active involvement in various communities, will allow you to contribute significantly to classroom discussions and group projects. Highlight how your experiences will enrich the INSEAD community.

On your biggest question (experience), we've had clients (including recent ones) at the 10+ mark accepted by INSEAD, so the high experience by itself shouldn't be an issue. Make sure you have a 700+ on the GMAT and you should be good.

Hey IntMBA24,

Your profile is quite impressive, with your diverse background, international experiences, and notable achievements. It's important to mention that you are a member of the LGBTQ community, which showcases your empathy towards the community and your efforts to raise awareness. However, it's also worth noting that your age is slightly on the higher end for a full-time MBA, but you could consider an executive MBA.

Regarding INSEAD's full-time MBA program, the average age of students is around 30, which might be a concern. However, you can still apply for their Executive MBA program, which requires applicants to have at least three years of managerial experience and an average age of 37.

If you're still interested in a full-time MBA, it's advisable to check with colleges regarding their age requirements to determine your eligibility for the program.

To enhance your candidacy, aim for a higher GMAT score between 700-730, which can improve your chances of admission to top-tier programs. Additionally, develop a more compelling post-MBA plan, and explain why you're interested in your chosen career path and how an MBA can help you achieve your goals.

To showcase your leadership and impact, provide specific examples of how you demonstrated your skills, such as leading a team, identifying and implementing a new process that improved efficiency, or mentoring colleagues. Use concrete numbers and metrics, describe how you collaborated with others, discuss challenges you faced and overcame, and highlight initiatives you led outside of work, such as volunteering. These examples demonstrate your resilience, problem-solving skills, ability to work effectively in a team, and commitment to making a positive impact in your community.

If you need more help, we'd be happy to set up a call and give more pointers on how to improve your profile and the right schools you should target.

If not ,what other schools should I look forward to .

Thanks !

Your profile looks strong, and you have an impressive academic background, diverse work experience, and extracurricular involvement. Let's dive into the evaluation and some advice:

- You have plenty of strengths. Your undergraduate GPA from a well-regarded institution like BITS Pilani and your Samsung work position you well for top MBA programs. Your experience in research, AI, and international exposure will be valuable in showcasing your adaptability and expertise. Your startup experience and consulting work demonstrate your entrepreneurial mindset and risk-taking abilities. The GMAT of 720 is decent as well.
- Clearly articulate your short-term and long-term goals and how your target MBA programs will help you achieve them. Product management is a pretty common goal at the moment, and you will need to highlight what your ambitions are in more detail. This will help admissions committees understand your motivation for pursuing an MBA. Showcase how your background in AI research and entrepreneurship will enable you to contribute to classroom discussions and group projects, enriching the learning experience for your peers.
- Regarding INSEAD, while it is known for its strong consulting placements, the program also offers a robust curriculum and resources in technology and other industries. If you find INSEAD's program aligns well with your goals, it could be a good option. However, you may also want to consider other top MBA programs such as LBS, HEC, Oxford, or Cambridge, in the region. Multiple other options in the US.

Feel free to come back with more questions.

Hey debayanb,

Thanks for sharing your profile

To begin with, let us address your main concern, GMAT is an important parameter when looking at top MBA schools globally, A score of 700+ would be very essential for your profile. Your other academics look decent, and combined with a good GMAT score, it’ll enhance your chances of getting an admit.

Work experience: 7+ years of experience will be the major highlight of your application. Your international exposure and leadership skills are important aspects of your profile. You will have to highlight instances where you went beyond your line of duty to achieve results. Identifying your USP is the major task ahead. Top B-schools look for an overall robust profile that is made up of a lot of parameters.

You haven’t mentioned your ECs, they add diversity to your profile and are an equally important parameter. Coming to your goals, you will have to highlight the reason behind your desire for transit. You should also classify your goals into short and long-term and align your goals with the values of the schools you are targeting.

Overall you seem to have a decent profile and stand a good chance at top B-schools. It all depends on how you connect the dots and build a great story around it. In order to evaluate your profile better and give you a fair and clear evaluation, we will like to have a detailed profile, thus feel free to schedule a call with us at your convenience.

Hey IntMBA24,

We appreciate you sharing your profile. On the surface, your profile seems interesting. The most important feature of your profile is your employment history. You can draw a lot of interesting stories from that. Let me first describe the criteria through which INSEAD examines your profile.

1) Ability to contribute

2) Capability to lead

3) Global Motivation

4) Academics

I can see a mix of the first three in your profile. A GMAT score of 700+ would add academics to the list too. Your vast work experience will be your major highlight. You need to bring out stories where you went beyond your line of duty to achieve your goals, it’ll also help you stand out from the crowd. Your ECs seem pretty decent too. Coming to your post-MBA goals, it is good to be clear with them. However, you would need to stick to your final goal. Having doubts about it would make your candidacy weak. I am very impressed that you have identified your weakness and strengths. You’ll need your strengths to overshadow your weaknesses.

You may want to read our article on How to get into INSEAD, to gain some insights of the school.

Overall your profile seems just amazing, all you need to do is to get a decent GMAT score. It’ll also depend on how you connect the dots of your profile and build a great narrative. If you have any other queries regarding your profile or need help with school selections, feel free to schedule a call with our profile experts at your convenience.

Hi IntMBA24 hope this finds you well

I am an INSEAD alum and have served tenure as admissions interviewer at INSEAD.

It's a positive indication for the admissions committee when an older applicant demonstrates genuine enthusiasm to participate and excel in the fast-paced and rigorous INSEAD MBA program. Given your extensive industry and global experience, you are a great fit for the school.

But you will encounter questions about your motivation for pursuing an MBA at this stage of your career. It is crucial to justify why, despite your successful career trajectory and global experience, you believe an INSEAD MBA is necessary and what you aim to achieve at this point in your professional journey. Competition can be intense at the extremes of the professional experience spectrum, so effectively communicating your aspirations is key.

Attending INSEAD can have a dual focus (in addition to career objective), including a strong emphasis on the DEI initiatives that the school has been deeply committed to in recent years. The cohorts at INSEAD have been actively and passionately driving change through collaborative efforts and rallying with local civic and government bodies at both the campuses. These efforts aim to improve diversity and inclusion and have been gradually but effectively making a positive impact.

Having probably the longest applications among all B-schools, INSEAD is genuinely interested in understanding how applicants can add value to the cohort by reflecting on their past experiences and sharing their learnings at all stages of peer-to-peer engagements. As an LGBT member and advocate, you have the significant opportunity to share your own experiences and elaborate on your plans to drive continuous change wherever you go, starting right from the INSEAD campus. Your insights and contributions in this area can make your application very strong.

Regarding the GMAT, focusing on achieving a good quant score (75th percentile and above) will demonstrate your ability to compete effectively in a rigorous academic environment. Also make sure your recommenders do a good job of substantiating your leadership skills with several anecdotes.

Best wishes

Hi AbhishekIPTAFS,

Thanks for sharing your profile and MBA aspirations.

My name is Priyanka, Client Manager at ARINGO. As the deadline for INSEAD Fall 2023 intake are already over, you can either apply for Jan intake or Fall 2024 intake (depending upon your GMAT status)

You have a very interesting profile! From what I can see:

Academics – good GPA in undergrad. We would also like to know where you did your undergrad, your class percentile, and your MPA details.

Work Experience –You have a very different and unique experience which is good! Strong international exposure is another positive point. However, your overall experience (and age) is on the higher side than the class average of INSEAD. You need to make an impactful resume quantifying the results, leadership skills, career trajectory, etc.

Extracurricular activities/Volunteer Work – Good volunteering experience and interesting hobbies.

Your career goals - Your career goals look fine as this is a logical extension of what you are doing presently. Schools love sustainability and energy sector-related goals

School list – Owing to your extensive experience, we would suggest considering applying for mid-career professional programs- https://aringo.com/mba-over-30/

All in all sounds like you have a good profile! If you send me your CV and other info on PRIYANKAK@ARINGO.com, I would love to connect you with our CEO who will be happy to help further with a detailed review and perhaps work together on some amazing apps.

All the best. :)

Hi AbhishekIPTAFS hope this finds you well

With over 16+ years of professional work experience, you are better suited for executive MBA programs. If you are interested in learning about INSEAD's GEMBA(Global Executive MBA Program) you can check out this link- https://www.insead.edu/master-programme ... admissions . This would be an excellent fit for you, as you would be joining a cohort of senior leaders and CXOs from global multinational corporations. This type of engagement likely aligns with what you are seeking at this stage of your career.

Your experience in critical roles within the Indian Government's public financial management is truly remarkable. With your caliber and achievements, top MBA programs for mid-career professionals would be thrilled to support you in your further journey. However, if you're interested in traditional full-time MBA programs, I strongly recommend reaching out directly to the school admissions offices and setting up calls to discuss your profile and obtain first-hand feedback from the schools themselves. You can also ask them to connect you with alumni who have undergone similar career transitions so that you can seek candid advice and gain insights into the ROI from these programs. I highly recommend considering MIT Sloan Fellows (Full time) and INSEAD GEMBA, which are among the best.

Best wishes

Hi Abhishek (@AbhishekIPTAFS)

You have done some stellar work and your profile is solid, but you may simply have too much experience for the INSEAD full-time MBA, if that is what you are looking for. Your profile would be more suitable for the EMBA.

You should also look for mid-career full-time options. Please see this article too.

Hey AbhishekIPTAFS,

Your profile is highly impressive. In fact, your international exposure in Germany is a huge advantage, and you should highlight how this experience has helped you develop a global perspective. Make sure to be specific about your career goals and how you plan to achieve them. You can showcase your leadership potential by highlighting your extra-curricular activities, such as being a competitive sports person, fundraising for an NGO, and developing CAMA during COVID-19.

To further highlight your leadership and impact at work, you can showcase your accomplishments, discuss and quantify your leadership style and values, talk about your mentoring and coaching experience, highlight your teamwork and collaboration skills, and discuss your impact outside of work. Be specific and provide examples to back up your claims, as this will help to paint a clear picture of your leadership potential and the positive impact you can make in the MBA program and beyond. Remember to also highlight your unique background, experiences, and perspectives that can add value to the INSEAD community. With your great profile and passion for sustainability and energy management, you can surely succeed in your application for MBA.

If you need more help, we'd be happy to set up a call and give more pointers on how to improve your profile and the right schools you should target.

However, your chances of admission to INSEAD will also depend on your GMAT score and how you can leverage your profile to differentiate yourself from other applicants.

Strengths:
Unique professional background: Your experience in finance management for the largest paramilitary force in the world and handling payment bank operations for connecting the unbanked in the government of India are impressive accomplishments. Furthermore, your experience in the EPC industry in oil and gas with international exposure in Germany and involvement in the design, development, and engineering of various projects shows your versatility in the field.
Strong academic background: Your Bachelor's in mechanical engineering and Master's in public administration indicate a strong academic foundation for an MBA program.
Diverse extracurricular activities: Your competitive sports background, development of CAMA during COVID-19 for marginalized sections, fundraising for an NGO, and extensive travel experience show your diverse interests and commitment to making a positive impact.
Clear post-MBA and long-term goals: Your goal of consulting and working in the field of green energy management aligns with INSEAD's focus on sustainability and social responsibility. Additionally, your long-term goal of setting up your own company in collaboration with 3rd world countries shows ambition and dedication.

Weaknesses:

No GMAT score: Not having taken the GMAT yet may put you at a disadvantage compared to other applicants who have already taken the exam and have higher scores.

Opportunities:
Leverage your unique professional background and international exposure to showcase your skills and experiences.
Highlight your extracurricular activities and how they demonstrate your leadership, teamwork, and commitment to social impact.
Articulate how INSEAD's MBA program will help you achieve your post-MBA and long-term goals and how you can contribute to the INSEAD community.

Overall, your profile seems competitive for INSEAD's MBA program. To increase your chances of admission, it is important to emphasize your unique experiences, showcase your strengths, and demonstrate how you can contribute to the INSEAD community. paarth93:

Overall, you have a good profile for INSEAD. I don't see a reason why you wouldn't be a solid candidate, but here is where you are vulnerable:

GMAT score is good, but not outstanding, especially for a candidate coming from a competitive demographic. It's up to you whether you wish to retake it. You're probably find without retaking but it's something we feel obligated to note.

Extracurricular activities will probably be sufficient, but aren't stellar. We're not seeing deep involvement. Are you also a participant in work-related initiatives? That can help round out a candidate's profile.

Your career goal isn't terribly unique. In fact, it's very common and might detract from your candidacy. You may end up pursuing this path but we would recommend you consider something a bit more original to help differentiate you.

Let us know if we can help further,

Hey paarth93,

Your profile looks competitive for admission to INSEAD MBA program. Your strong academic background with a good GMAT score, coupled with relevant work experience in a top-tier consulting firm and a prestigious MBA degree from IIM Udaipur, will make you a strong candidate for INSEAD.

Your post-MBA goals are well-defined and realistic, and your experience in commercial due diligence and PE consulting projects will be highly valued by MBB consulting firms and PE firms. Your experience working with colleagues from different regions and leading teams will also showcase your leadership skills, which is highly valued by INSEAD.

Your awards and recognition, as well as your extra-curricular activities, further demonstrate your leadership potential and well-roundedness. Your experience as a founder of an investment cell and part of the organizing committee for college/MBA fests shows that you have the ability to take the initiative and work well in teams.

Overall, your profile showcases a strong combination of academic excellence, professional achievements, leadership potential, and well-roundedness. However, keep in mind that INSEAD is a highly competitive program, and your admission will depend on various factors, including the quality of your application, essays, and interviews. Hi paarth93 hope this finds you well. I am an INSEAD alum and have served a tenure as INSEAD admissions interviewer for 3+ years.

I am curious whether you are considering a sponsored MBA program with Bain. If not, the admissions committee may question the rationale behind pursuing a second MBA, given your existing qualifications, including a CFA, a degree from an Indian business school, and substantial consulting experience at Bain. Therefore, it is crucial to demonstrate that your desire for INSEAD MBA is well-founded and extends beyond the mere addition of another prestigious brand to your resume.

Your GMAT score is lower than the average score for your demographic at INSEAD, particularly in the quant section, and there is an imbalance between your verbal and quant scores. Nonetheless, sponsored MBB consultants, particularly those with a strong foundation in finance, may be able to succeed at INSEAD admissions even with sub 710 GMAT scores.

As for your goals narrative in your application, elaborate on the underlying vision driving your long-term aspirations. Additionally, how do you envision your short-term post-MBA role helping you achieve this vision, and what elements of your plan might be both inspiring and ambitious? Needless to say, a thorough deliberation on your life trajectory and future goals will be key for winning an INSEAD admit.

Best wishes

Hey paarth93,

Your profile for INSEAD is impressive, featuring relevant work experience, awards, recognition, and well-known brand names from both your undergraduate and postgraduate studies. However, there are still some areas where you could improve your chances of being admitted to this top-tier institution.

Although your GMAT score of 700 is good, a higher score could further increase your chances of being accepted. It's important to consider the overall strength of your profile, including certifications and extracurricular activities, but a strong GMAT score can definitely be an asset.

While your short-term goal is clear, your long-term goal needs further clarification. You could emphasise your experience leading the Investment Cell to highlight your leadership skills better. Furthermore, you could explain how your travel experiences have prepared you to work in diverse environments.

To showcase your leadership and impact at work, you could provide specific examples of how you led teams, streamlined processes, and solved complex problems. You could also discuss your role in driving results by providing strategic recommendations that led to successful investment decisions. Highlighting how you mentored and coached junior staff to develop professionally would also be beneficial.

You can also focus on emphasising your short-term and long-term goals in more detail. By highlighting your interests and achievements outside of academics, you can demonstrate a well-rounded and dedicated profile.

Moreover, discussing any thought leadership initiatives you spearheaded, such as research on industry trends, whitepapers, or external speaking engagements, would showcase your expertise in the field. By providing concrete examples of your leadership and impact, you can demonstrate to the INSEAD admissions committee that you have the skills, experience, and potential to succeed in their academic and professional environment.

If you need more help, we'd be happy to set up a call and give more pointers on how to improve your profile and the right schools you should target.
