Hi pranavmitrag insead alum here

Regarding your GMAT score, while your overall score is balanced, INSEAD will evaluate your individual performance in quant on a normalized graph that takes into account the scores of applicants in your demographic. A 53rd percentile score in quant will be considered low. Nevertheless, your situation is intriguing because of your solid background in finance. Still, if I were in your shoes and damn serious about INSEAD, I would consider retaking the GMAT exam.

I must say that I find your work experience very impressive. Although you may not have had full-time international work experience (since you did not mention it), your rapid career growth in the pharma industry(strong industry focus) and entrepreneurial background can serve as a solid foundation for presenting your case to INSEAD. Before you start working on your essays, it's a good idea to brainstorm 4-5 themes that showcase the multidimensionality of your profile.

Regarding your goals, it would be a good practice to brainstorm the kind of projects you would like to work on as a management consultant. INSEAD would love to see how well you have researched your industry and future prospects. Overall, you seem to be a good fit for consulting.

Best wishes

Hey pranavmitrag,

Thanks for sharing your profile.

Your profile seems strong and impressive, particularly your 9+ years of work experience in finance and entrepreneurship. Your experience leading the Treasury department of large MNC pharmaceutical companies and working with cross-sectional teams across 15+ countries demonstrate your ability to manage complex and diverse teams, which is a valuable skill in management consulting.

Your entrepreneurial experience and leadership skills leading a team of 10 people and successfully launching a new product, indicate your ability to think creatively, take risks, and execute innovative ideas, which are qualities that consulting firms often look for.

Regarding your GMAT score, a total score of 720 is competitive for INSEAD, and your strong verbal score of 41 (93%) is particularly impressive. While your quant score is comparatively lower, it is not likely to be a significant obstacle in your application since your work experience has a strong finance focus and demonstrates quant skills. It is also worth noting that INSEAD takes a holistic approach to admissions and considers multiple factors beyond just GMAT scores.

Overall, your profile seems competitive for the INSEAD MBA program, and your goal of transitioning into management consulting post-MBA is achievable. Be sure to highlight your strengths in your application and demonstrate your fit with the program's values and culture.

Best of luck with your application!

I made an error while mentioning my percentile of quant score, it is 57% and not 53%. I am assuming this wouldn't change your opinion. You are right about international experience, I haven't myself worked in a different country than my home country but the nature of my profile required me to work with bankers and colleagues across the world. Thank you for this detailed response. Helps me make the decision.

I am glad you mentioned about my finance experience acting as a postive to showcase my quant skills beyond the GMAT. I am planning to take sometime to decide if I would want to apply with the same score and give the test again. Thank you for this detailed response. It really helps me to put things into perspective.

Hi Caraxes hope this finds you well

I will advise against applying in the late round at INSEAD (Jan intake) unless you have a very compelling reason to do so. While your GMAT score is balanced, it is not competitive enough for late-round Indian applicants. You should target a 730+ for the next cycle.

Furthermore, since you already have an MBA, the admissions committee would want to know why you need another one in order to transition into the social impact field. It is crucial to explore your motivations further and formulate a practical plan that emphasizes the importance of an INSEAD MBA. Research the leadership positions you aspire to and examine their feeder pipelines. If your short-term goal is to move into social impact advisory roles, highlight your previous engagement in this sector on your profile. If your role at ZS was focused on healthcare, consider how you can connect your experiences and learnings from that position to your social impact goals. Through reflection on your career experiences, aim to create a compelling narrative.

If you are open to the idea of working in the US, I would suggest you add Tuck and Duke to your list although you are slightly above the ideal age segment. These schools have a good healthcare focus and ZS is a strong feeder brand. Needless to say, a high GMAT score is important for any top-tier Global MBA program. The more effort you spend on improving your score, the higher the odds will be for securing the admits and scholarships.

Hey pranavmitrag,

You have an impressive background with solid work experience and a good GMAT score. However, you can further enhance your profile by highlighting strengths in other areas of your application.

Your work experience is noteworthy, and you can highlight your achievements such as your leadership in the Treasury department, where you were exposed to $2 billion, and your success in launching a new venture. Providing specific examples of your contributions to previous organizations and how they inform your future goals can also be beneficial. Moreover, offering more context on your career goal of transitioning into management consulting post-MBA can help demonstrate your knowledge of the industry and the skills you possess that would make you successful.

Lastly, showcasing your extracurricular activities can give a fuller picture of who you are as a person and what you are passionate about. To highlight your leadership and impact at work, provide specific examples such as identifying inefficiencies in cash management processes, motivating and inspiring a team to work collaboratively, or communicating complex financial information to non-financial stakeholders.

Regarding INSEAD's full-time MBA program, note that the average age of students is around 30, which may be a concern. However, you can still apply for their Executive MBA program, which requires applicants to have at least three years of managerial experience and an average age of 37.

If you're still interested in a full-time MBA, it's advisable to check with colleges regarding their age requirements to determine your eligibility for the program.

If you need more help, we'd be happy to set up a call and give more pointers on how to improve your profile and the right schools you should target.

Hey Caraxes,

You have a strong profile overall, with several impressive qualities such as your diverse international experience, passion for extracurricular activities, specific short-term and long-term goals, and a respectable GMAT score. However, there are areas that could use some attention to further strengthen your application.

To enhance your candidacy, consider providing concrete examples of your leadership skills in your essays and interviews. For instance, you could discuss projects where you successfully led a team to achieve a specific objective, such as collaborating with a multinational client or enhancing institutions worldwide. Ensure that you highlight the strategies you employed, the project's impact, and any challenges you encountered and overcame.

Additionally, you could elaborate on your experience working with ZS Associates in their consulting division and provide examples of projects where you played a leadership role and delivered meaningful outcomes for clients. Discuss your problem-solving skills and your ability to communicate complex ideas to stakeholders effectively.

Lastly, mention any initiatives you took to improve processes or procedures. For instance, you could talk about a project where you identified inefficiencies and took the initiative to streamline them. Emphasise how you collaborated with other team members to implement changes, the results you achieved, and the positive impact it had on productivity.

Overall, remember that admissions committees are looking for the human touch, so it's essential to share your passions, stories, and goals in your essays and interviews. By showcasing your leadership skills, problem-solving abilities, and passion for making an impact, you can bolster your candidacy and stand out from the competition.

If you need more help, we'd be happy to set up a call and give more pointers on how to improve your profile and the right schools you should target.
