Profile Review Request! : Ask mbaMission

Mar 25 at 07:01pm

I'm hoping to get an honest profile review. I just took the official GMAT and scored a 750 (49Q/42V/6IR) per my unofficial score report. My mocks were 750, 770, 770, and 780 and my more recent IR scores were 8/7, so I'm contemplating taking it again. I want to get a sense of how competitive my profile is before putting myself through another three weeks of studying :)

Demographic - Indian male (US citizen, born and raised). Age will be 27M at time of matriculation (currently 25).

Target Schools:
- Reaches: Wharton (would 770+ crack open the door to H/S?)
- Targets: Non-H/S/W M7, Yale
- Hopefully safe: I've largely had the M7 or bust mentality. Based on location and my limited knowledge of the programs Fuqua, Haas, McCombs are hopefully relatively safe bets. I would likely need scholarship $ to go given my current all in comp is $170k/yr
- Applying fall 2023 for enrollment fall 2024

Work Experience - 3.75 years WE (5 years at matriculation) in corporate finance for F500 healthcare/pharma/biotech company (not brand name). Started through leadership development program, was promoted twice in first three years (have Sr. Manager title, though no reports). Had indirect report for 1.5 year (oversaw on a daily basis, provided feedback to "official" manager)

Not sexy IB/MBB/PE work experience, but hopefully enough to give me a shot at M7

Previous Education - Undergrad at "Public Ivy" - double majored in business and life sciences. Undergrad GPA 3.95/4.00

Extracurriculars
- Developing/leading mentorship program between employees at my company and underserved youth in a nearby community
- Volunteer tax prep for a semester in undergrad
- A couple of leadership roles with student orgs during undergrad (if relevant)

Post-MBA Goals/Why MBA? - Still refining both my true intentions and my application story. Part of the reason I want to go back to school is to be around people my age (my company is old AF) and enjoy campus life (I squandered those opportunities during undergrad). Preliminary planning to join highly-respected F500 LDP program for general management track, with option to pivot back to corporate finance. Alternatively, typically MBB path then pivot to industry down the road.

Would appreciate any perspective on my chances and what I can do to improve my profile, specifically whether re-taking the GMAT for 760+ and IR7/8 will help. Thanks!

Overall a good profile..
You should start engaging with existing students and adcoms to evaluate which school will fit your long term goals

Hi Tryingmybesthere, thanks for reaching out to us at mbaMission. Congrats on your 750! You definitely do not need to retake! If you really want to because you feel like you left some points on the table and could take it again fairly quickly with minimal time commitment, then I wouldn't stop you...but you've already achieved a very high score and points above 750 would only have a minimal impact on your chances, especially since you already have a high GPA. There are so many other important components to the application, so I wouldn't want you to delay the research, networking, and reflecting that needs to start happening now too!

With your profile as it stands, I think Wharton + other M7s + Yale are definitely doable.

Hope that helps!
Kate
