Second MBA Profile Review : Ask mbaMission

Dec 29, 2022

Hi Team,

29M Indian planning to apply for a Second MBA/Masters in Finance

My Profile:
- Undergrad in Computer Science from Top 20 school in India (GPA 7.2/10)
- MBA from Indian Institute of Management Raipur (Top 20 b school with GPA 6/10)
- 5 years of work ex currently (1 pre-MBA and 4 years post-MBA)
- Pre MBA worked for a product based company in Transaction banking space
- Post MBA working as M&A and Strategy consultant at BIG 4 Indian offshore division
- No significant EC to boast, currently CFA Level 1 candidate

Post MBA/MiF goals:
- Management Consultant/Corp. Finance role
- Get international exposure with aim to settle

Target schools:
- INSEAD (MBA)
- LBS (MBA/MFin)
- MIT Sloan (MBA)

Question:
1) Given my background and career vision, are my target schools realistic taking into account my competitive demography?
2) What should be my target GMAT score, and should I wait for 2-3 years before applying.
3) Is going the certification route (CFA, FRM) and referrals the better alternative if second MBA from top b-school is not feasible?
4) Is Executive MBA more applicable for my profile for pivot to corp finance/MC role?

Thanks in advance

MBA from Indian Institute of Management Raipur (Top 20 b school with GPA 6/10)

Is this MBA and not PGDM like earlier? If MBA, then you'll have tough time explaining the need for another MBA.
Better bet would be a PhD in Finance heavy schools like Booth, Wharton or Columbia.
Ensure you wrap it in 3 or 4 years and you'll have global academic as well as IB/PE career tracks opening up for you.

Thanks for your reply. :)

I think I'll go the CFA, FRM route and later assess whether a full time MBA/EMBA makes sense for my career. The Sloan Fellows programme are of interest to me, but just sceptical about whether these could help me change my functional role within finance in my mid 30s. Guess I'll see about it then!!
